Published: October 20, 2026 at 1:45p.m. EDTBNN Bloomberg is Canada’s definitive source for business news dedicated exclusively to helping Canadians invest and build their businesses. ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have ordered more than three million of Nvidia’s new RTX PRO 5500 graphics cards with a collective sticker price of over US$35 billion, two people familiar with the matter said, in a rush for a less powerful but export-compliant chip amid U. S. restrictions on trade with China. US-based chipmaker Nvidia has told customers and partners it cannot guarantee that it can fill the orders because demand from Chinese technology companies far exceeds planned production, the two sources and a third person familiar with the matter said. They requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media. The RTX PRO 5500 is a workstation chip, designed for powerful professional computers rather than the large data-center clusters that use Nvidia’s most advanced AI processors. But it is among the most powerful Nvidia chips that are still available to Chinese buyers. Nvidia’s Blackwell-based B300 data-center chip is not allowed to be sold to Chinese buyers under U. S.

Major projects bill would put decades of labour stability at risk: union leader

Published: October 20, 2026 at 2:19p.m. EDTOTTAWA — The president of the Canadian Labour Congress says proposed amendments to Canada’s labour code outlined in Bill C-39 could put decades of labour stability at risk. The 243-page bill seeks to fast-track approvals for major projects, cut their review times and create zones of “national interest” to pre-approve certain types of projects. The bill also proposes changes to Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to state that a minister can order a business under federal jurisdiction to resume operations, or put parties into binding arbitration. Labour Congress president Bea Bruske told a House of Commons committee today those proposed new powers effectively eliminate the right to strike. Canadian Union of Public Employees national president Mark Hancock told the committee that when companies know the government will bail them out during a strike, they won’t put their best offer forward in contract negotiations.

Albertans have voted ‘yes’ to referendum questions on immigration. Here’s how Carney responded.

Published: October 20, 2026 at 2:17p.m. EDTOTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney says the federal and provincial governments should work together to get immigration down to sustainable levels before Alberta takes steps to do so on its own. Albertans cast their ballots on a slate of referendum questions Monday, and while the question around separation drew the most attention, there were nine others that cover a range of issues, from proposed Constitutional changes to health-care access. Five of the questions outside of the one on separation were focused on immigration, and could require constitutional changes to implement. “This government has recognized from the start, the need to take back control on immigration, and we’ve done so,” Carney told reporters on Parliament Hill Tuesday morning, while answering questions about the Alberta referendum results.

Keith Richards’ Top Picks for Oct. 20, 2026

Published: October 20, 2026 at 1:17p.m. EDTKeith Richards, president and chief portfolio manager at ValueTrend Wealth Management, shares his outlook on Technical Analysis. Keith Richards, President, Chief Portfolio Manager, ValueTrend Wealth ManagementFocus: Technical Analysis Top Picks: State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF, WSP Global, BMO Equal Weight Global Base Metals Hedged to CAD Index ETF MARKET OUTLOOK:On my last BNN show in September, I called ValueTrend’s approach to the markets as the “buy anything but tech trade”. That, of course, was contrarian in light of the market’s sole focus on tech stocks at the time. It would appear that my call for buying “anything else but tech” is coming to fruition. A rotation into undervalued stocks has begun. My view has not changed. The top 10 stocks now hold roughly 40 per cent of the S&P 500 index. Sheer lunacy!!! Soon, nearly 50 per cent of the S&P will be a roll of the dice on AI. The passive share of the market – aka retail investors- hold Index ETF’s. Their exposure keeps climbing. Moreover, large institutional investors such as pension managers also hold significant passive index exposure.

Trump drops threats against Canadian jet maker Bombardier, citing U.S. jobs

Published: October 20, 2026 at 12:50p.m. EDTVassy Kapelos weighs in on U. S. President Donald Trump’s latest threat to ban Canadian jet brand Bombardier from selling to the U. S. market. WASHINGTON/MONTREAL -- U. S. President Donald Trump has dropped threats against Canadian jet maker Bombardier to ban it from the U. S. market and instead vowed to take “good care” of the company’s workers in Kansas. Trump’s threats in September against Bombardier became a political issue in Kansas, where it employs 1,500 workers in Wichita. The threatened ban prompted calls to the White House from Kansas lawmakers including Republican Senator Roger Marshall, who is facing a tough re-election bid. “We’re going to take care of Bombardier,” Trump told 12 News in Kansas, citing Marshall’s involvement. At a speech Monday, Trump said he would help Bombardier. “I’m going to be helping a certain air company get themselves straightened away... I’ll be helping them because I always viewed them as a Canadian company,” Trump said. “But now I find out they have a presence here, and we’re not hurting them if they’re in Kansas.
