Newmont beats quarterly profit estimates as company benefits from higher gold prices

Open this photo in gallery:Liquid gold is poured to form gold dore bars at Newmont Mining's Carlin gold mine operation in Nevada in May, 2014. Rick Wilking/ReutersNewmont beat analysts’ third-quarter profit estimates on Thursday, as the world’s biggest gold miner benefited from higher prices of the metal. Gold prices have stayed high despite a stronger dollar and inflation concerns tied to higher oil prices during the U. S. war on Iran. Prices of the yellow metal averaged US$4,204.59 per ounce in the third quarter of 2026, up about 17.6 per cent from a year earlier. Quarterly average realized price for gold was at US$4.317 per ounce, compared with US$3,539 per ounce a year ago. But Newmont’s quarterly gold production fell to 1.30 million ounces from 1.42 million ounces a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, the company earned US$2.20 per share for the quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with analysts’ average estimate of US$2.05 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG.

No timeline to resume formal trade talks with U.S., chief negotiator says

Open this photo in gallery:Janice Charette, Canada's chief trade negotiator with the United States, speaks at the Toronto Global Forum conference on Thursday. Sammy Kogan/The Globe and MailCanada’s chief trade negotiator with the United States said she’s still communicating with her U. S. counterparts but there’s no timeline for returning to formal trade talks. Janice Charette pointed to a call that Prime Minister Mark Carney had with U. S. President Donald Trump this week, and said that Canada-U. S. trade minister Dominic LeBlanc “has regular and frequent conversations with some of his counterparts in the United States.”“We’re having conversations to see whether or not we can come back to the table for a set of detailed negotiations. We don’t know exactly when that’s going to happen,” Ms. Charette said at the Toronto Global Forum conference on Thursday. “We’re trying to stabilize the relationship because we are not in a position where it is stable right now. It’s certainly not predictable,” she said. Ms. Charette had been in intense negotiations with the Trump administration over the summer in a bid to reach a deal that would have lowered U. S.

Elon Musk enters his era amid the Tesla renaissance

Open this photo in gallery:The debut of Tesla's Roadster was a historic moment not just in itself but for what it signified, Gus Carlson writes. It shows what can be achieved when the automaker and SpaceX are combined, an idea Elon Musk endorsed this week. Tesla/ReutersGus Carlson is a U. S.-based columnist for The Globe and Mail. Call it a tale of two centuries – for Tesla, it was the best of times; for Porsche, well, not so much. The contrast in the launches last week of the latest high-end sports cars from the two luxury car companies reflected more than differences in the cars themselves. It was a stark juxtaposition of visions of what innovation in product development really is, and, perhaps, another example of the continuing redefinition of what the future will look like. The debuts – staged on the same day – were about as far apart on the old-school-new-school spectrum as you could get. In an austere, staid ceremony on a pier in Queens, New York, Porsche unveiled its latest super-car concept, the Mission S. The company said it was the same location used for the introduction of one of its early sports cars – the 550 Spyder – to the U. S. in 1953.

Dune launches real-time data feeds covering 200 onchain trading venues

Blockchain analytics platform Dune has launched real-time market data feeds covering more than 200 onchain trading venues, aiming to bring decentralized market activity into the trading systems used by traditional financial institutions. The new service provides trade data from 12 blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, Base and XLayer, roughly one second after execution, according to a Thursday announcement. The feeds cover spot trading across decentralized exchanges, as well as perpetual futures trading on Hyperliquid and Lighter, with standardized data on prices, trade sizes and transaction details across markets. According to Dune co-founder and CEO Fredrik Haga, quant funds, market makers, asset managers and bank trading desks are among the first clients using the service, although he declined to identify them, citing nondisclosure agreements. Dune said the firms use the data to assess liquidity, compare prices across venues and evaluate trading strategies before committing capital. “Most institutions are watching onchain markets first, because they can’t price these assets properly without them anymore,” Haga said.

Moderna shares sink over 25% as cancer vaccine data triggers ‘sell-the-news’ retreat

Open this photo in gallery:A sign marks the headquarters of Moderna Inc in Cambridge, Mass., in May, 2020. Brian Snyder/ReutersModerna’s MRNA-Q shares sank over 25 per cent on Thursday as late-stage trial data for its personalized melanoma vaccine, developed with Merck, triggered what analysts called a “sell-the-news” reaction after a months-long stock surge. The selloff wiped out about US$24-billion from the drugmaker’s market value, halting a massive rally that has lifted the stock over 500 per cent this year. Moderna was last down 25.2 per cent at US$183.88, set for its steepest one-day percentage fall on record, while Merck shares fell nearly 1 per cent. The companies, in August, reported interim data that showed the experimental vaccine, intismeran, cut the risk of recurrence and cancer spread in high-risk melanoma patients in a late-stage trial with over 1,100 patients. Detailed results from the trial on Thursday showed that intismeran combined with Merck’s immunotherapy Keytruda reduced the risk of cancer recurrence or death by 42 per cent, while cutting the risk of distant metastasis or death by 38 per cent compared to Keytruda alone.
