Integrating high-resolution magnetic surveys and metaheuristic optimization for quantitative characterization of subsurface magnetic sources in a municipal landfill - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractLandfill leachate poses a significant environmental risk by transporting toxic metals and organic contaminants into surrounding soil and groundwater. This study establishes a rapid, non-invasive geophysical framework for delineating potential subsurface leachate pathways using high-resolution magnetic surveying integrated with advanced magnetic data processing and metaheuristic optimization. A total of 246 magnetic measurements were acquired across the Benowo landfill, Surabaya, Indonesia, using a proton precession magnetometer. The data were processed through diurnal correction, International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) removal, upward continuation, Reduction-to-the-Pole (RTP) transformation, analytic signal, first vertical gradient, and horizontal gradient analyses to enhance anomaly localization and source-boundary delineation.

Source characterization and ecological risk of heavy metals in urban dust from two Iranian cities - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractUrban dust can accumulate potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and may reflect differences in anthropogenic activities among urban environments. This study comparatively evaluated the concentrations, potential sources, and ecological risks of 13 heavy metals in urban dust from Urmia (northwestern Iran) and Abadan (southwestern Iran). Temporally integrated dust samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Contamination and ecological risk were assessed using the contamination factor (Cf), enrichment factor (EF), pollution load index (PLI), and modified ecological risk (mRI) indices. Spearman correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were further applied to examine inter-element relationships and identify potential source patterns.

Experimental characterization and scaling of flexural rigidity in sewn multilayer structures - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractSewing is one of the established methods used to fabricate and assemble multilayer insulation (MLI) blankets for aerospace applications, yet the resulting effective flexural behavior remains insufficiently understood. This study investigates the room-temperature, quasi-static flexural behavior of MLI blankets composed of aluminized BoPET radiation shields and polyester net spacers across structural configurations of 2, 6, 12, and 24 layers. A full factorial design was employed to evaluate the influence of the number of layers, stitch density, needle thread tension, and needle foot force. Statistical analyses demonstrated that the number of layers is the dominant factor governing flexural response. Among the sewing parameters, needle thread tension was associated with modifications in bending length, while needle foot force primarily affected local compaction.

Microplastic contamination in commercially important marine fishes from the Sohar Coast, Sea of Oman: occurrence, characterization, and polymer composition - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractMicroplastic (MP) pollution is an increasing concern in marine environments because of its persistence, bioavailability, and potential implications for marine ecosystem health and seafood safety. Despite growing global attention, information on MP contamination in commercially important marine fish from the Sea of Oman remains limited. This study assessed the occurrence, abundance, and characteristics of MPs in four commercially important fish species from the Sohar coast and tested whether MP contamination differed among species and tissues and was associated with habitat group, sex, and biometric characteristics. A total of 120 fish representing Epinephelus areolatus, Lethrinus microdon, Nematalosa arabica, and Rastrelliger kanagurta were examined for MPs in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and gills.

Characterization and efficacy of green-synthesized silver nanoparticles against Puccinia species - in vitro - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractPuccinia species cause substantial losses in wheat production and productivity across the globe, creating a serious challenge to food security. The environmental and health risks associated with conventional fungicides necessitate sustainable alternatives. The present study examines the eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) employing Eucalyptus globulus leaf extract through a biological reduction approach and evaluates antifungal efficacy against wheat rust pathogens. GC-MS identified bioactive compounds in the phytoextract, primarily alkaloids and flavonoids. UV-visible spectroscopy confirmed AgNPs formation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential analysis established their functional groups, surface morphology and size (22–50 nm), crystalline nature, and colloidal stability.

New USGS-Funded Science Will Support Landslide Public Safety and Disaster Preparedness Nationwide - USGS (.gov)

USGS has selected 16 recipients to be awarded grant funding to address landslide risk reduction science. The grants will help advance landslide research capabilities. RESTON, Va. – The U. S. Geological Survey has awarded $1 million in federal grants to 16 states, local, and Tribal governments to support landslide risk reduction and enhance public safety nationwide. These grants, originally authorized under the National Landslide Preparedness Act, now mark a significant step in advancing the nation’s ability to identify at-risk areas and protect communities from landslides. “People rarely think about landslides until they are threatened by one,” said Stephen Slaughter, USGS landslide geologist. “That is why it is so important to support local governments’ efforts to map these hazards, educate the public, and reduce the risk to their communities.”These annual landslide grants fund research efforts that enhance the scientific understanding of landslide risks, map and assess their locations, and inform mitigation strategies used to protect against them.
