The man then shot himself. The children were thought to be 4 and 10 years old, police said. The shooting occurred around 12:40 p.m. near Catalina Street and Venice Boulevard. According to TV station KTLA, a witness riding an L. A. Metro bus said she saw the drama unfold in broad daylight. Police could not confirm those details, but video from local news stations showed L. A. Fire Department and police vehicles gathered at a site on a sidewalk, and a street was blocked off by yellow police tape. The children and the man were transported to a hospital, where the children were pronounced dead. The man, whose condition was not immediately clear, remains in custody at the hospital.

Hopkinton man arraigned on attempted murder charges for allegedly holding man underwater at lake

A 70-year-old Hopkinton man was arraigned Monday on an attempted murder charge for allegedly trying to drown a man at a local beach following a dispute over his use of a jet ski, records show. Steven A. Dana pleaded not guilty in Middlesex Superior Court on Monday to charges of attempted murder, strangulation or suffocation, and misdemeanor assault and battery, records show. He is due back in court on Dec. 11 for a pretrial hearing. Dana’s attorney, David J. Grimaldi, declined to comment Monday. Dana was indicted by a grand jury last month in connection with the June 3 incident at Lake Maspenock, in which he allegedly held Matthew Duffy, 21, of Milford, under the water for 10 seconds. He was arraigned in Framingham District Court and released on $7,500 bail. On Monday, Judge Michael A. Sullivan approved the transfer of Dana’s bail to the superior court case and ordered that he stay away from Duffy and the beach and not possess any weapons during his release. Prosecutor Daniel Bolcun requested the bail transfer, saying that Dana had a “limited” criminal record and noting the seriousness of the charges against him, according to a recording of the arraignment.
