Job interviews are a weird business – but what’s the alternative? | Emma Beddington - The Guardian

I was part of a job interview process recently, on the hiring side of the table for the first time in 15 years, and was instantly reminded how weird the whole business is. The debate about whether bringing iced coffee to interviews is bad form just highlights the silliness of selection processes: you could bring a live weasel to an interview and still get the job if the interviewer likes the look of you. It’s a biased, arbitrary business, and interviewers decide fast (a 2015 study found 25% decided within five minutes and 60% within 15), sometimes on little more than vibes. Everyone has a horror story: an acquaintance was recently told she was “perfect for the role”, despite barely saying a word as the interviewer monologued wildly for 45 minutes while vaping in her face. Being a good interviewee isn’t the same as being a good employee, either. I’ve crashed and burned at every interview, including for jobs I know I would have done decently. Once my interviewers told me they knew I was messy “because we’ve seen your kitchen” (the perils of 00s blogging); another time, a junior employee informed me before the ordeal had even started that I’d blown it by wearing trousers.

Highlights and Junior replays: Whistler World Cup - Canadian Cycling Magazine

If you missed Whistler’s debut on the World Cup circuit well, you probably shouldn’t have. It was incredible, from the course to crowds and racing. Whistler, and all of western Canada, waited a long time for this one, and showed up in force. You can, at least, catch up on all the action with highlights from the elite races and full replays from the junior racing. And then make plans to be there in person in 2027!

The United States Will Be Worse off for Losing International Scientists - The Equation - Union of Concerned Scientists

Science is being attacked from many angles. In my last post, I wrote about what that means for early-career scientists and experts, and how funding cuts, disappearing programs, and fewer opportunities are already affecting the next generation of scientific talent. Not knowing whether your research will be funded or whether a position will exist is difficult enough. But for many international scientists and students, there’s another layer of uncertainty: wondering whether you’ll be able to stay in the country long enough to build your career. International scientists have long been an essential part of the US scientific enterprise. Scientists and technical experts from around the world come here to study, conduct research, collaborate, and, in many cases, stay and join the US workforce. That exchange has helped make American science what it is today. Cultivating diversity in American science isn’t just about adding people to labs and institutions: scientists from different backgrounds contribute their varied experiences and ways of thinking to expand perspectives and provide new possibilities for problem-solving.

Photo report: Seed meets Technology 2026 - FreshPlaza

Seed meets Technology, the international seed technology trade show, took place this year at Vertify in Zwaagdijk-Oost, in the Netherlands' North Holland province. The three-day event brought together suppliers and users of seed processing equipment from around the world. As in previous editions, the show floor was filled with machinery, much of it in operation. What stood out, however, was that exhibitors asked about their latest innovations increasingly pointed to a screen or dashboard rather than a machine. With artificial intelligence on the rise, good software is becoming essential. Accurate measurement remains important, but the quality of the data behind it may matter even more. The photo report from the show features many of these screens, dashboards, and mobile apps. The event also drew many familiar companies and faces. At the same time, it continues to attract newcomers, bringing new technologies from new countries. Click here for the photo report © Thijmen Tiersma | FreshPlaza.com

‘It’s problematic’: concern as weight-loss jab maker sponsors Vogue World event - The Guardian

The fifth iteration of Vogue World, overseen by Anna Wintour, took place in Milan on Tuesday night. Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Lopez provided theatrics on the catwalk, but it was one of the event’s backers that caused the biggest stir. Eli Lilly, an American pharmaceutical company that manufactures a wide range of medicines, including weight-loss jabs Mounjaro and the Foundayo pill, was listed in the event credits as one of its “fashion adjacent” sponsors. The pharmaceutical company also sponsored the 2025 Vogue World in Hollywood, as well as the Met Gala livestream earlier this year, which included a promotional video starring the actor Patrick Schwarzenegger and the fashion brand Public School. While the ongoing partnership did not explicitly link Mounjaro or Foundayo with Vogue, the marriage of high-profile fashion events and a weight-loss drug manufacturer has attracted fierce criticism from eating disorder charities and academics. These groups have long believed that the fashion industry promotes thinness by habitually casting very thin models in catwalk shows, editorials and advertising, and warned of the negative impact this could have.

Psycho-cardiovascular interaction network links mental health and heart disease - EurekAlert!

image: Psycho-cardiovascular interaction network (PCIN): from mind to heart via multilevel mechanisms. The psycho-cardiovascular interaction network (PCIN) links psychological and psychiatric conditions with cardiovascular health and disease through bidirectional associations. System-level mechanisms include hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance, chronic inflammation, platelet activation, unhealthy behaviors, and sleep/circadian disruption. These converge on key signaling pathways: brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), prokineticin/prokineticin receptor (PROK/PKR), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), 5-hydroxytryptamine/5-HT2A receptor (5-HT/5-HT2A-R), and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3). A new review proposes the psycho-cardiovascular interaction network (PCIN), a framework that links psychological and psychiatric factors with cardiovascular health and disease. The review integrates epidemiological evidence, system-level mechanisms, and molecular signaling pathways to explain how depression, anxiety, chronic stress, and other mental health conditions may contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD), and vice versa.

Comedian Recalls Stephen Colbert Phone Call That Left Her ‘Shaking With Shame’ - HuffPost

Sounds like Stephen Colbert had a rough 2025 — and so did his protégé. Stand-up comedian Taylor Tomlinson — the former host of the Colbert-produced “After Midnight” — is opening up about how just months before CBS canceled “The Late Show,” she had a pretty awkward phone call with Colbert in which she told him she was quitting his show. “I spent that call with Stephen (Mr. Colbert? Not sure how to address him now) crying and apologizing before I got off the phone, shaking with shame,” Tomlinson wrote in her new memoir “Actually, Nevermind,” per an excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter. “I felt awful and guilty and yet again — disappointing.”Tomlinson hosted the improv-based “After Midnight” that aired immediately after “Colbert” on CBS for two seasons from January 2024 to June 2025. She announced her departure in March 2025. The timeline that led up to her call with Colbert makes her exit sound extra messy. The “Quarter-Life Crisis” comedian explained in her memoir that just hours after she told two executive producers about her decision to leave, CBS informed the show that “After Midnight” had been renewed for a third season.

Kelowna businesses raise safety concerns as mayoral candidates debate public safety - Global News

Frustration is growing on Commerce Avenue in Kelowna. Business owner Gerald Goertsen says over the weekend security cameras captured someone ripping out lavender plants from the side of his commercial building. “Just complete destruction without, without any consequence,” Goertsen said. He describes the latest incident as part of a pattern of crime and social disorder in the area. Goertsen spoke to Global News two weeks ago about his concerns, including an incident in which the handles of his office doors were tied together with a plastic bag, temporarily locking him inside while his vehicle was broken into. “It’s not safe to be here anymore, and something needs to change,” he said. Incumbent Kelowna Mayor and mayoral candidate Tom Dyas is campaigning on a “safer streets” platform that includes pushing for more detox and treatment services. Story continues below advertisement
