When can we say AI made a scientific discovery? - MIT Technology Review

This story originally appeared in The Algorithm, our weekly newsletter on AI. To get stories like this in your inbox first, sign up here. Last Wednesday, Anthropic announced that earlier this year it had launched a molecular biology lab, where Claude agents read and conjecture about hard biology problems and human scientists run experiments on what they report. And this AI-powered lab, the company said, had made its first discovery.  To understand what Anthropic says its system did, imagine you’re flipping through a library of millions of DNA sequences, amassed as scientists sequence more and more of the living world. One step toward a breakthrough might be finding a peculiar sequence that encodes an interesting enzyme, perhaps. Then you’d need to figure out what that enzyme does and, eventually, how to manipulate it to do something useful. What Anthropic says its system of 950 agents found after 21 hours was not a brand-new sequence. The agents instead flagged a repeating pattern surrounding a known enzyme, a particular pattern Anthropic said hadn’t been catalogued before.

These Montreal Tim Hortons locations racked up $14K in health inspection fines this year - MTL Blog

Tim Hortons might be Canada's main coffee institution, but that doesn't mean every location is passing its health inspections. According to records published by Quebec's Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ), multiple Tim Hortons locations across Montreal have been fined over the past 12 months, with penalties totalling over $14,000. As always with MAPAQ fine records, there's often a significant gap between the date of the infraction and when the judgment is actually published, sometimes months, sometimes well over a year. The violations listed below don't necessarily reflect current conditions at any of these locations. Rue Jarry EstAddress: 7150 Rue Jarry Est, Montreal, QC H1J1G5Fine: $1,000Reason for the offence: The premises, equipment, materials and utensils used for food preparation, packaging, storage, transport, labelling and service, along with other sanitary facilities, weren't being kept clean. Amelia Dimoldenberg destroys Ed Sheeran during 'SNL UK' monologue - Mashable

Sam Haysom is the General Assignment Editor, UK, for Mashable. He covers entertainment and online culture, and writes horror fiction in his spare time. Amelia Dimoldenberg may have had Ed Sheeran on her show before, but that didn't stop her from taking a solid jab at the singer during her SNL UK monologue. "I'm incredibly privileged to have done so many interviews with people like Idris Elba, Cher, and even a world-famous red-headed puppet with a hand up his arse, telling him what to say," says the Chicken Shop Date host in the clip above. Meanwhile, an image of her and Elmo appears in the background. "No, the other one," she adds, switching to an image of Ed Sheeran, in a joke referencing the widespread criticism the singer has received recently after Macklemore was dropped from his tour after saying "Free Palestine" during a show. This is the second week Sheeran has been mocked on SNL UK — last Saturday, he took a roasting during the "Weekend Update" segment.

Dogs Share a Speech Trick Once Thought Uniquely Human - ScienceAlert

Your dog may prick up its ears at its name or run to the door when it hears "walk. " But can its brain separate unfamiliar words when it hears them without a pause? In a new experiment, dogs listened to a continuous recording of invented words. No pause indicated where one word ended and the next began. Yet their brains responded to recurring consonants, a clue to which syllables belonged together. The same clear word-level response did not appear when vowels defined the words. The study published in Science does not show that dogs learned what the words meant. It reveals a preference previously demonstrated only in humans: when dividing continuous speech into parts, the brain can prioritize consonant patterns over the louder vowels. At first, that preference sounds odd. Vowels carry more acoustic energy and stand out more clearly than consonants. Why would a listener favor quieter sounds? Across many human languages, consonants often provide more information about which word is being spoken. The researchers wanted to know whether dogs, who spend their lives hearing us talk, might pick up on that usefulness too.

NASA Highlights Lessons Learned From Swift Boost Mission - NASA Science (.gov)

A commercial mission to boost NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory concluded without raising the spacecraft’s orbit, but the agency and industry vendor Katalyst Space have gained valuable experience that will benefit future in-space servicing programs. “From the beginning, this was a high-risk, high-reward mission,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Without intervention, Swift was going to re-enter the atmosphere by year’s end. And while we’ll be sad to see Swift’s mission come to a close, we knew this boost effort would be valuable to the agency on multiple levels — advancing U. S. spacecraft servicing technology, challenging us to meet unprecedented mission timelines, and testing how we operate satellites to extend their time in low Earth orbit. We’re very proud of how quickly this team got so far, and we’re capturing lessons learned to ensure we’re ready to go even farther.”

Europe cashes in as U.S. science and tech exodus gathers pace - Fortune

Alex Worsham had no intention of leaving America. He served six and a half years in the U. S. military as an IT and cybersecurity specialist, then helped protect the Library of Congress and the Transportation Security Administration from cyberattacks. But when he decided to pursue a PhD on the security of emerging technologies, Worsham found American research gripped by “uncertainty.” Instead, he looked for opportunities elsewhere, and this summer moved to Norway to study at the University of Oslo.

Congo Ebola outbreak tops 8,000 cases as health worker shortages worsen - NBC News

The number of confirmed cases of Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surged past 8,000 as the country runs out of health workers to contain the deadly disease. Congo announced an outbreak on May 15, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no known treatment or vaccine, and has struggled to contain it. The latest data from Congo’s health ministry released Sunday showed that 8,067 cases have been confirmed, with 3,901 deaths as of Sept. 26 across 63 health zones in seven of the country’s 26 provinces, with a fatality rate of more than 48%. Health workers tend to an Ebola patient at the Rwampara Treatment Center in Ituri. Moses Sawasawa / AP file“The continuously high crude case fatality ratio, and especially the continuously high rate of deaths occurring in communities, highlights the seriousness of the disease and the persistent challenges in timely case detection and access to early and adequate patient care,” the World Health Organization said in its latest report. It means that a large percentage of those infected were dying, without taking into account factors like delay in seeking help and response, or hidden cases.

‘Dare I say TikTok is saving jazz’: Black Nile rewrites the L.A. jazz story for a new generation - Los Angeles Times

The Black Nile — a duo composed of Inglewood brothers Lawrence and Aaron Shaw — are about to play their biggest hometown show yet when they open for Erykah Badu at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday. The brothers were connected with Badu through L. A. artist Lauren Halsey. It was a fitting introduction because the convergence of visual art and music was all around the band as they recorded their most recent album, “Indigo Garden,” inspired by a residency they did at Mass MoCA in Massachusetts. “The long legacy and history of visual arts with music, they are hand in hand because in some ways they elevate each other,” Lawrence says. “The experience is elevated when you attach visuals to music and audio to visuals and being surrounded, in that environment where it’s nothing but creatives, it really brought us back, in a lot of ways, to childhood because that’s how we grew up in a lot of jazz camps and a lot of art camps.” Shaped by a MASS MoCA residency and collaborations with artists Lauren Halsey and Charles Gaines, Black Nile’s new album “Indigo Garden” fuses immersive visuals, lighting and jazz into a single, living installation.
