UN warns of ‘narrowing window’ to restore world’s forests - The Guardian

The world faces a “narrowing window” to restore forests essential for food security and resistance to the climate emergency, a United Nations report has warned. More than 489m hectares (1.2bn acres) of forests have been cleared since 1990, while an even greater area is degraded, the world body said in a call for governments to make forest restoration a national priority. The State of the World’s Forests report acknowledges recent steps forward in protection and tree planting around the globe but says action has not kept pace with commitments. Over the past two decades, national, regional and global initiatives have promised to place more than 1bn hectares of land under restoration, but barely a fifth of that is actually being restored, the report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) notes, saying: “Progress is uneven, and it is insufficient to meet growing global needs.”Graph showing annual rate of forest expansion and deforestation from 1990 to 2025Forests, which cover 4.14bn hectares (about a third of Earth’s land surface), store 714 gigatonnes of carbon and host up to 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity.

Benjamin Daniel, known as "Ben Dancer", aimed to dance for seven days to break the Guinness World Records title for the longest dance marathon by an individual. Cheered on by friends and supporters at Lagos's Freedom Park, the 33-year-old reached his target time at around 03:00 local time but continued dancing for another nine hours until midday, his team says. The physically exhausted dancer has now gone to hospital for a medical check-up. Guinness World Records has confirmed to the BBC that it has received Daniel's application for the title. The current record stands at 127 hours. "Benjamin's application is active and we now eagerly await submission of his evidence, which will then go through our official review and verification process before any record can be confirmed," a spokesperson for Guinness World Records said in the statement.

From the Fallout franchise to more recent examples like Hideo Kojima’s wildly inventive Death Stranding series, gamers are more than familiar with exploring ravaged worlds destroyed by nuclear weapons, zombies, or invisible beings from another dimension. Despite being a well-worn genre for decades, one of its most beloved installments arrived relatively recently: 2013’s The Last of Us, developed by the same Naughty Dog that created another industry darling with the Uncharted series. Not only was The Last of Us met with immense critical acclaim, but it was a watershed moment for video games as an interactive storytelling medium, and its success spawned an equally acclaimed sequel and an HBO TV series adaptation.

Cities keep shelling out taxpayer money for sports stadiums, yet the economics almost never makes sense - The Conversation

Americans are crazy about sports. But whether that passion requires taxpayers to subsidize new facilities every time leagues and franchises ask for them needs rigorous scrutiny. A lot of money is at stake. For 2025, the NFL reported some US$14.5 billion in revenue, while the MLB collected an estimated $12.2 billion and the NBA earned almost $12 billion.
