Cheryl Williams, Unifor Local 114 member, accepted the 2026 Bud Jimmerfield Award at Unifor Canadian Council in Ottawa, recognizing a decade of work making Cascade Aerospace a safer place to work. “Health and safety leadership is rarely one big moment. It is a thousand acts of persistence, and Cheryl Williams has strung together ten years of them,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Every worker who finishes their shift and goes home whole is the measure of that work. Thank you, Cheryl, for keeping prevention of workplace injury and illness at the top of the priority list where it belongs.”The Bud Jimmerfield Award recognizes members who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to preventing workplace disease, injury and death. It is awarded annually to a Unifor member who has led by example and who works to make sure every worker goes home safe and healthy. Bud Jimmerfield spent 31 years as a machinist, exposed every day to cancer-causing metalworking fluids. At 47, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. When the compensation board denied his claim, Bud and his union fought back and won a landmark case that put toxic exposures in the national spotlight.

A ‘monster web’ of ocean currents is set to collapse. And the US is not prepared - BBC Science Focus Magazine

Looking out from the bridge of the Norwegian polar research vessel Kronprins Haakon (see main image), dense pack ice extends into the darkness in every direction. To the east, a narrow strip of purple paints the midday sky just above the horizon. It’s the first sign of daylight here in three months. Research ships rarely venture into this region – 1,000km (621 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, in the Greenland Sea – during polar night.

Fedorov offers drone technology to US in exchange for Patriots, seeks funding for defense tech fund - The Kyiv Independent

Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is seeking U. S. investment for a new defense technology fund and offering to help Washington develop drone capabilities in exchange for Patriot missile interceptors for Ukraine, he told the Financial Times in an interview published Aug. 30. The proposal comes as Fedorov has begun an international trip that has included Italy and the United States after being dismissed by President Volodymyr Zelensky as defense minister. Fedorov told the FT in Washington that he is seeking backing from venture capitalists, private investors, and U. S. technology companies for a fund that would invest in Ukrainian defense startups and create new companies focused on battlefield technologies. "This is not exactly a classic venture fund," Fedorov said in an interview. "We're writing a new history of the war. "Fedorov said the fund would initially focus on battlefield robotics, high-speed interceptor drones capable of countering Russia's newer jet-powered attack drones, and low-cost missiles equipped with artificial intelligence.

Geniatech Color E-Paper Partial Refresh Technology is Winning Awards - Good e-Reader

Geniatech has achieved a breakthrough in full-color e-paper interaction by enabling dynamic special-effect transitions during partial refreshes—a capability previously unavailable in commercial e-paper displays. Geniatech’s engineering team aimed to rethink the conventional understanding of e-paper display capabilities. Leveraging an FPGA platform, they devised a novel method that merges 8-bit grayscale template-mapped phase shifting with a dual-dimension lookup table algorithm. This innovation allows dynamic transition effects to be seamlessly integrated into the partial refresh process, achieving a unique blend of “partial refresh” and “animated transition effects” not seen before in e-paper technology.

What happened to the cast of “Superman”? Inside the lives of Christopher Reeve and his costars - Yahoo

It might be hard to picture these days, when even a "light" superhero year still means three or four massive-budget DC or Marvel adaptations. But there was a time when comic-book heroes appeared on movie screens only sparingly — particularly between the waning days of old serials and the premiere of Superman in 1978. Superman was advertised as a movie that would allow audiences to believe a man could fly, and they did. It was the second-biggest box-office hit of the year. It also set the big-screen template for superhero origin stories. The film follows Superman's entire backstory, from his brief time as a newborn on the dying planet Krypton to his discovery on Earth by a kindly couple and upbringing as a not-so-ordinary Kansas farm boy. As an adult, Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) sets out for the big city of Metropolis, where he lives a double life as a bumbling newspaper reporter and a costumed hero fighting for justice. He crosses paths with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), who becomes his great love, and Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), who becomes his great enemy. It's a lot of movie.

How Stew Leonard's Tackles He Boomer-to-Millennial Business Handover - Business Insider

Stew Leonard Jr. is greeted like a celebrity as he makes his way through his family's business. Known as Connecticut's "Disneyland of grocery stores," Leonard's locations come complete with animatronics, petting zoos, and costumed mascots. Every few feet, a customer does a double-take and rushes over. Mostly, they want to say hello or ask for a selfie. A few have constructive criticism to share. Over by the Stew Leonard's Farm Fresh Five, a band of singing milk cartons, a mom with two young kids approaches him. She has an idea to make the restrooms more family-friendly, showing a picture of a rest stop bathroom with child-sized toilets and superior design. Stew Jr. tells her to forward the picture to his team. Stew Jr. has been president of the small-but-mighty grocery empire since 1982, for 44 of the company's 57 years. He moves with the ease of a graduating senior walking their high school halls: He knows where everyone and everything is, and they know him. But Stew Jr. won't be the face of Stew's for much longer. Walking with Stew Jr., but going mostly unrecognized, are his successors.

Some Ontario government, business websites show ‘Lake America’ on maps - Global News

Just 24 hours after Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a sign proclaiming Lake Ontario is “now and forever,” the province launched a review after some agency websites displayed “Lake America” in their mapping applications. Stephen Crawford, minister of public and business service delivery and procurement, said on X that some of the websites pull map data directly from Google Maps. “Following recent changes by Google, we’re actively reviewing our websites to make sure they all identify Lake Ontario by its correct name: Lake Ontario,” Crawford wrote. The post came after people on social media noticed that maps on sites including Hydro One, Metrolinx, Infrastructure Ontario and the LCBO all displayed “Lake America.”The new name came after U. S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order late this week amid the ongoing trade war between Canada and the U. S., as well as harsh words by Ford after trade talks fell apart last weekend.
