Description

What can crude oil tell us about power? Artist Tanoa Sasraku examines the histories embedded in materials, from crude-oil paperweights and military body armour to mineral pigments dug from the earth. Travelling to Scotland’s Inchindown Oil Tanks, Sasraku considers the relationships between oil, imperialism, conflict and our own experiences of power, control and protection. 0:00 Memory, place and finding a way back 0:48 Working with earth and mineral pigments 1:54 Crude oil, power and conflict 3:45 Collecting objects and personal histories 5:00 Childhood, Ghana and Sasraku’s father 5:37 Transforming materials in the studio 6:23 Inside the Inchindown Oil Tanks 8:16 Power, control and protection The Turner Prize 2026 exhibition is on at MIMA 26 September 2026 – 28 March 2027.
