Alexandria approves friendship city tie with Osijek, days before Croatian sports conference comes to town - The Alexandria Brief

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to establish a one-year friendship city relationship with Osijek, Croatia, an arrangement that grew out of the Croatian national soccer team’s World Cup base camp in the city this summer. The resolution authorizes City Manager James Parajon to enter a non-binding agreement on a one-year trial basis and directs him to convene a task force that will report to council at regular intervals. Six days later, the Croatian Embassy will hold an all-day sports conference at The Satire, the Alexandria hotel where the team stayed. Mayor Alyia Gaskins is a panelist on a session titled “World Cup 2026: Alexandria & Osijek.”

JCC Maccabi Games: Sports are only part of the experience - Frequency News

(AJNews) – 24 Alberta Jewish athletes between the ages of 13 and 17 continue to bask in the afterglow of the JCC Maccabi Games, held in Toronto August 2 to 6.  The games, attracted close to 2,000 athletes representing 55 delegations from North America and around the world, giving young adults competing at a variety of levels the thrill of participating in a large sporting event while forming Jewish bonds through their shared interest in sports. This time, getting there was not half the fun. A strike by WestJet flight attendants led to mayhem as families scrambled to book alternative flights. Fortunately, with the help of organizers, Team Alberta made it to Toronto intact and raring to go.

Oversubscribed provincial grant program gets $5M bump for healthier communities through sports - Penticton Herald

Arenas, pitches, ball diamonds and trails help keep Albertans and their communities healthy and vibrant, a cabinet minister said in touting a topped-up initiative that contributes dollars to sports and recreation projects. Andrew Boitchenko said that curling rinks, pickleball courts and other sports-and-rec infrastructure tie strongly to physical and mental well-being across the province. Approvals worth an extra $5 million pushed grants under the Active Communities Initiative to $14 million this year. But enough demand exists for even greater provincial participation, said Boitchenko, the minister of tourism and sport and the UCP member for Drayton Valley-Devon. “I was happy to hear we were getting the top-up because we’re oversubscribed,” Boitchenko told The Macleod Gazette. The bump is a one-timer, but Boitchenko said he’ll advocate for more money in coming years because of the initiative’s importance and popularity.
