Last month, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward Brendan Brisson to a one-year contract for the 2026-27 season. The Maple Leafs' decision to sign Brisson is not too difficult to understand. They needed more forward depth, and Brisson is a young former NHL first-round pick. Thus, there was no risk in Toronto signing him for the season. Now, the Maple Leafs' decision to sign Brisson is looking very smart. This is because the 24-year-old forward is absolutely dominating the AHL with the Toronto Marlies right now. In four games so far this campaign with the Marlies, Brisson has recorded an impressive five goals and seven points. This included him recording a hat trick for the Marlies in his most recent appearance against the Hamilton Hammers on Oct. 11. He also scored two goals and recorded an assist against the Hammers on Oct. 3. With numbers like these, Brisson is making an immediate impact with the Marlies. Now, he will be aiming to keep this kind of play up for the AHL club from here. Could Brisson earn a call-up to the Maple Leafs' roster soon?

Brendan Bonello can name every goaltender to suit up for the Toronto Maple Leafs over the last two decades. He also eventually realized his own quest to stop NHL shooters would likely never materialize. The Mississauga, Ont., product patrolled the crease in junior and university hockey, along with a brief stint in the third-tier ECHL. His playing days over, Bonello got the opportunity to help the Maple Leafs’ organization whenever an extra netminder was needed at practice or a game-day skate. The road, it seemed, ended there. But with the NHL’s move to professionalize the seldom-used emergency backup position this season, Bonello and 31 other goaltenders are getting another crack at living out childhood dreams. “Your goal is to make it,” said the 27-year-old, who is serving as Toronto’s so-called “EBUG” in 2026-27 and grew up idolizing former Maple Leafs netminder Ed Belfour. “Getting a second chance, you don’t take it for granted. “Being here now is surreal.”Calgary Flames emergency backup Dusty Nickel was in the same role the last five seasons before getting the permanent call. “Right place at the right time,” said the 35-year-old ex-Junior A goalie.

The Ottawa Redblacks have named CFL rookie Bryson Barnes as the starting quarterback for the Week 20 game against the Toronto Argonauts. “I want to give him start, see what Bryson’s got. I feel like he’s ready for this at this stage,” head coach and general manager Ryan Dinwiddie confirmed to the media on Wednesday.

The Ottawa Redblacks have named Bryson Barnes their starter at quarterback for their Week 20 game against the Toronto Argonauts. Barnes took first-team reps in practice throughout the week and will make the first start of his CFL career on Friday. The Redblacks will look to Barnes to end their losing streak, as Ottawa has just two chances remaining to avoid a winless season. “We’re going to give him the start, see what Bryson’s got,” Redblacks head coach Ryan Dinwiddie said after Wednesday’s practice. “I think he’s ready for this stage. Early in his career, a young kid, there’s going to be some ups and downs. We’re going to have to shrink the package a bit and do things he’s comfortable with.”Dinwiddie pointed to Barnes’ ability to use his legs as part of what he offers over the other two options at QB for the Redblacks. Ottawa’s starting quarterback in the season opener was Jake Maier, who was acquired in the off-season from the Calgary Stampeders. Maier made 12 starts before he was benched midway through the team’s Week 15 showdown against the Argonauts, when veteran McLeod Bethel-Thompson took over.

Koepke scored a goal on three shots, added three hits and blocked two shots in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Wild. Koepke has filled a fourth-line role over the last four games after opening the season as a healthy scratch. The 28-year-old has a goal, four shots, six hits, four blocks and a minus-2 rating. Koepke is unlikely to score at a level to interest most fantasy managers, but he has enough physicality in his playing style to offer help in banger leagues. DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings don’t want to move Simon Edvinsson and are working hard to sign the restricted free agent defenseman, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Wednesday. “I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson,” Horcoff said. “I want to keep him. "

Teams around the NHL have been lining up to have a chance at pitching the Detroit Red Wings on a Simon Edvinsson trade. The latest news, however, from Wings GM Shawn Horcoff should put all that talk to rest. Shawn Horcoff: “I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson”— Max Bultman (@m_bultman) October 14, 2026 I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson. Not something I'm entertaining. We want to sign him. This emphatic statement shutting down trade talks comes despite the report that emanated out of Sweden last week, where the unsigned RFA defenseman was said to have a "preference" to be dealt rather than to re-sign in Detroit. Edvinsson, unsigned all summer mostly because the Red Wings didn't have a GM in place to handle that sort of thing, made a magnanimous gesture by attending training camp anyway on a PTO. Edvinsson recently returned from Sweden, but no agreement is in sightBut when camp was over, and the two sides were nowhere close to a deal, his locker was removed from the Red Wings' room, and Edvinsson was no longer around the team. He left for Sweden shortly thereafter. He just returned to North America this week to continue training on the East Coast.

The Canadiens announced Wednesday morning that they have called up defenceman David Reinbacher from the AHL’s Laval Rocket, but he won’t be in the lineup Wednesday night in Washington against the Capitals (7:30 p.m., Prime). Defenceman Mike Matheson missed Tuesday night’s 4-3 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres at the Bell Centre with a lower-body injury. Defenceman Noah Dobson took a shot in the face during the second period of Tuesday night’s game, but returned to play in the third period.
