Politicians from the far left to the far right criticized the government for a police response deemed too weak or ill-prepared, with some calling for Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez to resign. Nuñez told journalists Saturday that the police had not been understaffed, but that it was hard to contain rioters “when they’re scattered in small groups.”Saturday’s unrest, which led to nearly 2,400 arrests, caused widespread damage to several symbols of the state. Among them was a 19th-century city hall largely destroyed by fire in Limoges, a town in central France renowned for its porcelain. Higher tourism numbers mean more people to entertain — but also fresh blood in the busking community. As a record number of new performers arrive in Salem, veteran buskers are banding together to protect the soul of their craft. Local business network Creative Collective is helping get things organized amid the huge crowds with a new pilot program that lets buskers rent a 5-by-5-foot area for a given day. “There [are] certain iconic folks [who] have spaces they love, so they can have them without getting into an argument with anyone,” said John Andrews, president of Creative Collective, a business support group for Essex County. Andrews said he’d heard the concern that “as it’s become busier… people come from all over the world to be street performers.”A woman posed for a photo with an actor dressed as Michael Myers, the masked killer from the “Halloween” films, as fog swirled around them.

The growing season came to an end for much of the area Sunday morning, with many places away from the coast down into the 20s. If you didn’t cover or bring in tender vegetation, it’s likely gone. Look for a frosty start to Monday as well, but overall, this week won’t be as cold with high pressure building in from Canada. Monday will develop into a sunny day with highs in the upper 50s to 60. Highs on Monday should reach the upper 50s, with a few spots touching 60 degrees. Boston GlobeOur next brewing nor’easter? The forecast challenge this week is how much, if any, impact we’ll see from a storm brewing in the Atlantic. It’s likely that this storm, which has a much lower pressure than the high pressure areas coming in from Canada, will create a big enough gradient to bring consistent breezy conditions, especially along the coastline for much of the upcoming week. I’ll add in the chance for a couple of showers over Cape Cod and the islands, which could make it into Southeastern Massachusetts Tuesday or Wednesday, but as of now, cloudiness and breezy conditions will be the primary issues.
