Healey has an ‘oversight problem,’ but Minogue has Trump and a running mate’s crash

During last week’s gubernatorial debate, Governor Maura Healey’s terrible answer — “Sometimes things happen” — to a question relating to an alleged rape that happened in the State Police barracks on Martha’s Vineyard might have opened a tiny window of opportunity for Mike Minogue, her Republican challenger. But after Shawn Oliver, the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, pleaded not guilty to drunken driving charges following his arrest over the weekend in New Bedford, that opening is harder to see. Minogue was already saddled with President Trump’s MAGA agenda, along with his personal opposition to abortion rights in a state that strongly supports them. Now, with Oliver’s arrest, it’s hard to see how things could get any worse for Minogue and the Massachusetts GOP — or any better for Healey and her bid for the kind of resounding reelection victory that would seal her image as a major player in the Democratic Party. B.C. judge says parole rules for multiple murderers unconstitutional

A British Columbia Supreme Court judge says a section of the Criminal Code restricting multiple murderers from applying for early parole under the so-called “faint-hope” clause is unconstitutional. Justice Brenda Brown ruled on Monday that the section of the code prescribing 25 years of parole ineligibility infringes upon the Charter of Rights and Freedoms’ guarantees against cruel and unusual punishment.

Toronto police officer who pleaded guilty in Project South probe gets conditional discharge

Elias Mouawad, one of the Toronto police officers arrested in connection with Project South – a sweeping police corruption and organized crime probe – has been handed a conditional discharge. Mouawad, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized use of a computer last month. A charge of breach of trust was withdrawn. A conditional discharge means that Mouawad will not have a criminal conviction if the conditions of his probation are met. Superior Justice Catherine Rhinelander sentenced Mouawad to one-year probation and 100 hours of community service Monday. She said Mouawad must have no contact with Daljit Singh and Brian Da Costa, who were also arrested in the Project South probe. “The evidence supports the conclusion that this offence represents a serious lapse of judgement rather than entrenched behavior,” said Rhinelander. As temperatures drop, prescribed burns may be in the forecast - Wyoming Public Media

FILE: A prescribed fire in the Yellowtail Wildlife Management Area in northwest Wyoming in 2020. Though prescribed fires are meant to revitalize wildlife habitats, uncontrolled ones can cause both immediate and long-term damage to them, in addition to affecting public access and even the hunting season. National Interagency Fire Center With lower temperatures in the forecast, the U. S. Forest Service has begun planning for prescribed burns in Wyoming. The Medicine Bow National Forest in southeast Wyoming will burn about 2,000 acres across the Pole Mountain area east of Laramie. “Prescribed burning is a part of our normal program of work,” said Aaron Voos, the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests  and Thunder Basin National Grassland  public affairs specialist. “It's a very valuable tool that we have to treat and be proactive with management of the landscape.”According to Voos, the goal of the Pole Mountain burn is to reduce overgrown vegetation so less fuel is available to burn during a wildfire. But there are also other reasons for reducing vegetation. “When we do treatments across the landscape, we're looking to sometimes change the vegetation. Maybe it's undesirable.
