Treestand safety tips for hunters - St. Albans Messenger

With Vermont’s archery deer season starting Oct. 1, Vermont Fish and Wildlife urges hunters to take the time to follow basic safety procedures to avoid falls from tree stands. VERMONT — Treestands get hunters out of sight and smell of wary deer and bear, but they can also get hunters into trouble. Here are some tips from Vermont Fish and Wildlife to help stay safe and get the most out of your tree stand hunting experience:Choose a live, straight tree, and avoid ash that may be in decline due to emerald ash borers. Buy smart. Only use stands certified by the Treestand Manufacturers Association. Inspect them each time you use them. Check your treestand for wear and tear each time you go out into the woods. Know the rules. On state lands, it is illegal to place nails or other hardware into trees or to build permanent structures. On private lands, you must have landowner permission to erect a tree stand, cut or remove trees or other plants, or to cut limbs. All stands, including ground blinds, must be marked with the owner’s name and address. Always wear a full-body safety harness, even for climbing. Most falls occur going up and down the tree and getting in and out of the stand.

Supreme Court declines to hear appeal in disputed Afghan adoption case

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court declined Monday to hear an appeal in a disputed adoption case involving an Afghan child orphaned in a U. S. Army raid. The child’s relatives appealed to the high court after a U. S. Marine who helped evacuate them from Afghanistan took custody of the girl despite State Department efforts to reunite her with her Afghan family. A 2022 Associated Press report about the case raised alarms at the highest levels of government, from the Taliban to the White House. The child’s parents were killed in September 2019 when U. S. Army Rangers, along with Afghan forces, raided a rural compound. The baby was found in the rubble and hospitalized at Bagram Air Base near Kabul, where military lawyer Joshua Mast decided with his wife to adopt her. But the State Department during President Donald Trump’s first administration worked with the Afghan government to track down surviving relatives, identified as a cousin and his wife. A shaken Donnie Wahlberg posts video after plane skids off runway at Vegas airport. ‘God covered us.’

What is it with the Wahlbergs and airplanes? Donnie Wahlberg narrowly averted disaster Sunday when the private jet he was in skidded off a runway at Las Vegas’s Harry Reid International Airport. “We were taking off and didn’t get up in the air,” the Dorchester native said in a video posted soon afterward on Instagram. “I’m just going to tell you these pilots saved our lives. And God covered us.”Wahlberg looks pale and shaken in the video. He’s standing on the tarmac, surrounded by emergency vehicles. The 57-year-old singer and actor says the jet — a Dassault Falcon 50 headed for Toronto — ran out of runway, but somehow managed to avoid crashing into fences, trucks, heavy equipment, and dumpsters. “It was me and my team/friends onboard the aircraft. It was a rather intense few moments,” Wahlberg wrote on Instagram. “Thankful to God, of course, and to our incredible pilots who did an amazing job of keeping us safe and avoiding a serious disaster. The airplane did take some lumps — but we did not.”Get Starting PointA guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.
