Albertans vote on path to independence as Carney fights to keep Canada united

But even if Albertans reject the proposal, separatist leaders say the movement that has transformed a fringe cause into a force in provincial politics is not going away. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney urged Albertans not to take the outcome for granted and asked for a decisive result as he wrapped up two days of campaigning in his home province. “Vote like Canada’s future depends on it because it does,” Carney told a pro-Canada rally Friday in Edmonton, where he grew up. The vote also comes as Alberta reels from a deadly weekend fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright that killed four service members and injured 39 people, including 19 critically, during military training. Carney called it one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada’s military on domestic soil and ordered flags lowered to half-staff nationwide. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who called the referendum despite opposing independence, recently cited a poll showing just 22% support for separation, a figure she said was still too high.

Boyfriend and college friend have conflicted history

Q. I’ve been dating my boyfriend for about five years. I recently reconnected with a friend from college who I’ve really missed. After we hung out a few times, I introduced my college friend to my boyfriend at a casual dinner. Things did not go well. It turns out they went to middle school together. My boyfriend says that my college friend was “a total nightmare” in middle school and “made his life miserable.” This doesn’t sound like my college friend at all. They were kind of terse with each other at the dinner and afterward my boyfriend was like, “I’m never hanging out with that awful guy again.”For his part, my college friend didn’t say anything about it beyond that it was a funny coincidence that I was dating someone he went to middle school with. So, I’m not sure if he’s avoiding the subject or he really didn’t have an issue. 'That’s my voice': Friend of late Mississippi teen Nolan Wells speaks out on what he saw that day - ABC News - Breaking News, Latest News and Videos

A high school friend of Nolan Wells says that a viral video depicting a Fourth of July party at a barrier island off the coast of Mississippi does not depict an argument involving Wells, but actually shows him, he said to ABC News in a broadcast exclusive. Wells, an 18-year-old Mississippi college football player, died following the all-day party on Horn Island, off the coast of Ocean Springs, his hometown. Attorney Ben Crump, who represents Wells' parents, said Friday that Wells is among a group of people standing on the island and is heard on the video, shot from a boat on the water, demanding his phone back. However, Tracestin Shepherd, who said he was a high school friend of Wells, said on Sunday the voice heard on the video was his own. Wells is not in the video, he said. "That's me yelling. ... there was no talk about a phone in that video," but instead, Shepherd said, he was telling others who were both restraining him, to let him off the boat so he could continue the fight. Wells, an 18-year-old Mississippi football player, died last weekend following an all-day party on Horn Island, off the coast of Ocean Springs, his hometown.
