Canada scores its first -20°C of the season later than normal - The Weather Network

Potentially a sign of things to come, the season’s first official -20°C of the year arrived a bit later than normal. Two areas in the Far North registered morning low temperatures in the minus-20s on Sunday, Oct. 4, marking the first time Canada has seen such a cold reading this season. DON’T MISS: With a 'super' El Nino, does that guarantee late-fall warmth in Canada? A pair of minus-20s on the boardMargaret Lake, Yukon, and Mould Bay, N. W. T., each dipped below the minus-20 mark on Sunday morning. Margaret Lake, which is about 275 km northeast of Dawson City, dropped down to -22.0°C to see this season’s coldest temperature across Canada. The site’s location at the foot of nearby mountains may have helped accentuate the morning’s chill. Mould Bay reached -20.9°C around the same time as Arctic air spilled over the island airport located in the Far North. The dual achievement arrived a little later than normal, and it’s the latest first -20°C reading we’ve seen in Canada since 2023. The country’s first minus-20 readings arrived in Nunavut during the past two years: in Eureka on Sept. 29, 2025, and in Alert on Sept. 27, 2024.

Shapovalov Retires in Tokyo Quarter-Final Battle with Alcaraz - Tennis Canada

It was an undeserved end to a tight encounter between Denis Shapovalov and Carlos Alcaraz in the Japan Open Tennis Championships quarter-finals on Sunday. Shapovalov had a few opportunities to clinch the opener but was broken when serving for the set at 5-3, then let a set point slip on return in the following game. The 27-year-old from Richmond Hill ultimately dropped the first in a tiebreaker before his push for a comeback was cut short as he was forced to retire at 7-6(3), 2-1 with an apparent hip injury. The Canadian No. 2 dealt with an ankle injury just two months ago that had him retire in his opening match at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Montreal. Shapovalov held his nerve early in the opening set in Tokyo. The Richmond Hillian fought off a break point in the third and fifth game, both at 30-40, before the break frenzy began with Alcaraz serving at 2-3. There was just one service hold the rest of the way, which came when the Spaniard saved set point and extended the opener at 4-5. Alcaraz even had the chance to serve out the set in the 12th game but was broken at love as Shapovalov forced a tiebreaker.

A K-Drama That Was Filmed in Canada? You Know I’m Watching! - GX94 Radio

It’s no secret that I like to partake in a K-drama from time to time. What I find so fantastic about Korean dramas is the fact that they’ll usually wrap everything up in one season. No being left on a cliffhanger ever. Okay, not every time, but like 99% of the time you get a nice ending that wraps up the story. The most recent K-drama I watched, Can This Love Be Translated?, was partially filmed in Canada. The premise is that they’re filming a reality dating show with a Korean celebrity, Cha Mu-hee, and a Japanese celebrity, Hiro Kurosawa, and they’re all whisked away to a few romantic destinations. The catch? They don’t speak the same language, so they can only communicate through a translator. A couple of the romantic destinations included Banff National Park and Calgary in Alberta, and were filmed on location. It was really cool to see a familiar place be the setting, especially when these shows sometimes feel like it takes place in another world. All in all, I think it was a fun watch!

How John Wort Hannam rediscovered the muse after COVID - Roots Music Canada

As strange as it may seem, the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown was at first a positive time for singer-songwriter John Wort Hannam. At that time, he had a number of unfinished songs. The unplanned time off the road meant he could hone them to a finished form. Those songs were the basis of 2021’s The Long Haul. The album gave John three Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. He subsequently won for Contemporary Album of the Year and Solo Artist of the Year.

Why Canada is wargaming a (long shot) US invasion - BBC

Site search3 October 2026Nadine YousifandRobin Levinson-King,in TorontoGetty ImagesPrime Minister Mark Carney admitted last week that he has prepared for a once-unthinkable scenario - a US invasion. Noting the risk was low and the likelihood highly improbable, he told the New York Times he had a responsibility to consider all possibilities as the US-Canada relationship is redefined under the Donald Trump presidency. "That's just risk management," Carney said. Trump's global tariffs and his often-repeated desire to make Canada the 51st state has led Canada to war game an attack by the Americans. In 2025, the US president said it was "highly unlikely" that the US would ever use force against Canada. Instead he said, he would continue to exert economic pressures to obtain political aims. "President Trump has done more than anyone to protect the great people of Canada," the White House told the BBC in a statement this week. Military experts who spoke to the BBC also think an invasion is a long shot, pointing to the multiple ways the two countries work together on defence. But the issue is clearly weighing on Canadians' minds.
