USD/CAD Hits April 2025 High as Weak Canada Jobs Data Deepens US Yield Advantage - VT Markets

USD/CAD rose on Friday as the Canadian Dollar weakened after a soft domestic jobs report, while a firm US Dollar added to the move. The pair was trading near 1.4276, a level last seen in April 2025, as markets repriced the Canadian outlook and leaned towards further US policy tightening. Statistics Canada said employment fell by 68.3K in September versus expectations for a 7K rise, following a 41.7K decline in August. The unemployment rate ticked up to 6.5% from 6.4%, while participation slipped to 64.8%, its lowest since December 1997 outside the pandemic period. Canadian yields dropped, with the two-year down more than 8 basis points to about 3.199%, while the US Dollar stayed near an 18-month high and the DXY sat around 102.30 after an intraday low of 101.92. The US two-year yield held near 4.797%, about 160 basis points above Canada’s, as attention shifts to the University of Michigan sentiment reading and 1-year and 5-year inflation expectations.

Canada Jobs Fall 68,300 in September, Fueling BoC Rate-Cut Bets and CAD Pressure - VT Markets

Canada’s net change in employment fell by 68.3K in September, undershooting the 7K increase expected by the market. The result points to a weaker labour market print for the month and marks a clear reversal versus forecasts. The downside surprise may feed into expectations for the economic outlook and the policy path of the Bank of Canada, as employment trends can influence growth and inflation dynamics. Markets are likely to weigh the gap between the -68.3K outcome and the 7K consensus when reassessing near-term probabilities for interest rate moves.

‘Section 38’ documentary brings Alberta’s independence debate to screens - Yahoo News Canada

A Calgary filmmaker who spent seven years documenting Alberta's separatist movement says the current push for independence in the province is part of a much larger conversation about Canada's future. Mathew Embry released his feature documentary, Section 38, on Oct. 8, ahead of Alberta's Oct. 19 referendum. The film examines the history of the separatist movement and the grievances behind it, while exploring broader questions about Canada's natural resources and its relationship with the United States. The title refers to Section 38 of the Constitution Act, 1982, which sets out a general procedure for amending Canada's Constitution. The title reflects both the constitutional questions surrounding Alberta's independence and the broader issues of sovereignty, national unity and Canada's future. Embry said he first began filming the movement during the early days of Wexit, when he was interested in concerns about Canada's approach to oil and gas development. "As a Calgary-born filmmaker, I've always been very interested in Alberta politics and politics across Canada and internationally, in particular when the separatist movement started," Embry said.
