Canadian AI company turns away from U.S. government work amid trade tensions - Global News

A Vancouver-based artificial intelligence company says it is turning away from opportunities with the U. S. government as tensions between Canada and the United States raise questions about Canada’s reliance on its southern neighbour for AI investment and infrastructure. Caseway, which develops AI tools for applications including legal and defence-related work, says it is instead focusing on Canadian defence and seeking opportunities in markets such as Europe and Taiwan. “I’m not comfortable going in and helping the U. S. with their AI needs at the same time that they’re threatening us,” Caseway CEO Al Vigier told Global News. He added that U. S. President Donald Trump’s repeated suggestions that Canada should become the “51st state,” helped drive the company’s decision.

Economic frustration helps fuel Alberta separatism — and these 4 charts suggest why - CBC

Alberta is rich. So why are so many people frustrated?7 hours ago|Duration 4:54Alberta is Canada’s wealthiest province, yet economic frustrations are one of the key factors fuelling the separation debate. For The National, CBC’s Ina Sidhu breaks down how the resource-rich province ended up here and what independence could mean for its economy. Alberta has long been seen as a province with an economic advantage — the wealthiest in Canada in terms of GDP per capita, rich in natural resources and no provincial sales tax. But not all Albertans are feeling that prosperity. Albertans frustrated with Ottawa point to a "lost decade" marred by unstable oil prices, cancelled pipeline projects and unemployment. Morad Rizkalla, a retired petroleum engineer who spent nearly 40 years working in Alberta's energy sector, says cancelled pipelines have cost Alberta and Canada economic opportunities. "We're like 20 years behind here," he said. Years of economic frustration have helped fuel the province's separation debate, which is culminating in a vote this month to decide if Alberta should pursue independence.

Canada drops 4-3 decision to Denmark in women’s soccer friendly in Toronto - saskNOW

“They made us pay for all of our mistakes,” said Canadian forward Evelyne Viens. “It was pretty clear.” Viens, Olivia Smith and Delaney Pridham scored for Canada in front of an announced crowd of 12,112 on a warm, mostly sunny afternoon at the lakefront stadium. The teams played to a 1-1 draw on Friday in Montreal. Smith scored a late equalizer for the hosts in that game and Canada won the unofficial shootout 4-2. On Monday, the ninth-ranked Canadians started with a 4-2-3-1 formation while the 12th-ranked Danes went with a 3-4-3. Kailen Sheridan started in net for Canada and Jessie Fleming wore the captain’s armband. Pridham opened the scoring in the 10th minute after Kaylee Hunter headed the ball low into a packed penalty area. Pridham swivelled and beat goalkeeper Freja Thisgaard for her first goal with the women’s senior team. “I was just ready, back to goal, turned and just hit it in,” Pridham said. “I think I caught the goalie off guard.”Canada kept the pressure on and was nearly rewarded moments later when Smith’s shot from outside the area glanced off Thisgaard and hit the post. Defensive miscues contributed to the Denmark scoring surge that started in the 24th minute.
