MLB Roundtable: Division Series Picks and World Series Predictions - Sports Illustrated
Eight teams remain in the MLB postseason, with the top two seeds from each league getting in on the action during the division series. Just as we did for the wild-card round, Sports Illustrated’s MLB staff is getting our picks on the record just in time for all four series to start. Can you imagine a more perfect way to spend a fall Saturday? ALDS 1: Rays vs. YankeesTom Verducci: Yankees in five. Rays will make this a tight, low-scoring series. Their big three of Diaz, Caminero and Aranda must deliver big hits, including home runs. New York has more depth in the rotation and position players. Ryan Phillips: Yankees in five. I picked the Rays to go to the World Series before the postseason, but that’s why we do these round-by-round. The Yankees torched the Red Sox in the wild-card series without Aaron Judge. That rotation is too good and too deep. This series will be competitive, but Tampa simply won’t keep up. Will Laws: Rays in five. Not enough respect for the AL East champions here! Assuming Aaron Judge doesn’t return at full strength, Junior Caminero is the best hitter in this series and will have a breakout series to lead Tampa Bay to victory.

The Strange World Of… Steve Reich - The Quietus
As the pioneering minimalist composer turns 90, Sean Kitching offers ten points of entry into his back catalogue, and wishes him a Happy Birthday. Portrait by Carolyn Cole A trailblazing contemporary composer with a career spanning over six decades, Steve Reich’s field of influence extends considerably beyond the classical sphere. Considered to be one of the founders of musical minimalism, Reich’s work has been an inspiration to the likes of Philip Glass, John Adams, the ensemble Bang On A Can and Max Richter, as well as to numerous pop and electronic musicians. Talking Heads, The Feelies, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Owen Pallett, Jonny Greenwood, Battles, Bryce Dessner of The National, Richie Hawtin (Plastikman), DJ Spooky, Aphex Twin and William Basinski – to list some of the more prominent names. Horse Lords’ most recent album, Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!, which reached number 22 in The Quietus mid-year chart, owes his work a clear debt. Whilst Bill Orcutt’s 2024 mash up of Reich’s Four Organs and Richard Berry’s ‘Louie Louie’, Four Louies, offers an example of one of the more playful uses of Reich-inspired composition.

Postseason no-hitters and close calls - MLB.com
There’s no greater challenge, or opportunity, for a starting pitcher than taking the ball in October, and there are some nights where everything aligns. MLB history has seen more than 3,000 postseason starts, but only a few pitchers have even crossed the seven-inning threshold with a no-hitter bid. And, of course, only two men have ever finished a postseason game having kept the ‘H’ column at zero on the scoreboard. The Astros had us thinking back to those two occasions when they finished off the first combined no-hitter in postseason history in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series in Philadelphia. Below, in reverse chronological order, is a look at the three historic postseason no-hitters, along with the closest no-hitter calls in postseason history, per the Elias Sports Bureau. POSTSEASON NO-HITTERSCristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly, Astros: 2022 World Series Game 4, No-hitterWhen Javier got the ball for Game 4, he had his work cut out for him, with the Astros down 2-1 in the series following a deflating Game 3 loss.

Alex Yee shows class in emphatic Rome World Cup win - World Triathlon
Some athletes just have a gravitas around them that scrambles the brains of their opponents, and at today’s Rome World Cup Olympic champion Alex Yee (GBR) served a reminder that his aura is as strong as ever. After finding himself on the back foot in the swim, Yee worked his way up to the front on the bike, at which point his rivals seemed to lose hope in beating him. The Briton duly showed why as he unfurled a superlative 5km run to claim his first international win since making his return to international triathlon from his marathon detour. “It’s never easy racing these guys,” said Yee. “I decided to race this race because this kind of racing can sometimes expose me a little bit. So I really wanted to put myself in here and do my best. I really enjoyed the racing. It was hard racing, very honest. All in all, just a good race.”In a breathless 750m swim, recent World U23 Championship medallists Michael Gar (GBR) and Zalan Hóbor (HUN) led the way. With over sixty men in the field and multiple buoys to navigate, it was easy to lose position. Yee was not immune to this and emerged outside the top-40 men and 40 seconds down on the leaders.
