NewsI went to Colorado’s Springs Resort to relax. I left with something more valuable. SharePhotograph: Tamara Gane | Pools at the Springs ResortI am very good at falling asleep. Staying asleep is another matter. Most nights, I wake up at least once, usually several times, and struggle to fall back asleep. As a result, I’m so groggy in the morning I need coffee to think. So when I woke up at the Springs Resort in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, about an hour from Durango, Colorado and 2.5 hours from Santa Fe, New Mexico, I was surprised to realize I’d slept through the night.

New Zealand cling to hope of Kalyn Ponga playing at World Cup despite broken arm - The Guardian
Kalyn Ponga will undergo surgery on his broken arm but will remain in camp with New Zealand not giving up on the superstar fullback playing again in the Rugby League World Cup. Ponga failed to finish his long-awaited Test debut for the Kiwis, departing in the 70th minute of the 24-22 loss after suffering the injury earlier in the second half. Receiving clearance earlier this year to switch his allegiance to New Zealand, Ponga delivered a standout performance at Allianz Stadium as his side fell to Australia in the Thursday night thriller. The Newcastle skipper scored two tries while running 253 metres from 16 runs, making three line breaks and five tackle breaks. He has been booked in for surgery after breaking his radius in his left arm but Kiwis team doctor Greg Macleod sounded hopeful about the prospect of Ponga playing again through the tournament. Amid war, IMF-World Bank confab juggles equal parts relief, dread - Responsible Statecraft
The annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank are being held in Bangkok this year against a backdrop of equal parts relief and dread. In her curtain-raising speech, IMF head Kristalina Georgieva said the global economy had navigated through serial shocks with “remarkable agility,” and that the meeting would focus on energy prices, high government debt, and the rise of AI. The relief comes from the resilience of the global economy in the face of a war in the Middle East that has continued far longer than was expected at the spring meetings held in Washington in April. The dread comes from worries that the war in the Gulf (and other conflicts) are continuing; that the energy buffers protecting the global economy are being eroded; that AI, which is seemingly offsetting the risks to global growth right now, is a potential source of immense job losses if it works and financial shocks if it does not work; and that rising global bond yields are threatening not just the economy but also fiscal solvency in many countries.
