Designing Energy Storage for Real-World Production: DOE Launches the Storage Design STEP Prize - Department of Energy (.gov)

The U. S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity (OE) launched the Storage Design Strategies to Ease Production (STEP) Prize, a new competition to help the next generation of energy storage technologies move more smoothly from concept to real-world manufacturing. The Storage Design STEP Prize recognizes innovators who are working on novel energy storage technologies and encourages them to build production readiness into their designs from the start. A New Kind of Challenge for a New Generation of InnovatorsAcross the energy sector, innovators developing breakthrough technologies often encounter a similar set of obstacles: even when a new system performs well in early testing, challenges with manufacturing, materials, or supply chains can slow or stop progress long before the technology reaches commercial scale. These challenges can range from specialized components that are difficult to source, to manufacturing steps that become costly or inconsistent when scaled up. The Storage Design STEP Prize addresses these hurdles directly.

Far right on the march and Lula’s failures: key drivers of Flávio Bolsonaro’s Brazil surge - The Guardian

On Sunday night, as the scale of the far-right triumph in Brazil sank in, an adapted football chant rang out in one of Rio’s most leftwing areas. “Let’s turn this around, Lu-laaaaa! Let’s turn this around, Lu-laaaaa! Let’s turn this around, Lu-laaaaa!” crestfallen progressives bellowed while drowning their sorrows after witnessing an excruciating election setback for their leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. But the scale of the challenge facing the veteran leftist looks immense after Flávio Bolsonaro’s shock first-round win, which analysts attribute to a complex lattice of social, political and religious phenomena. “Flávio Bolsonaro’s result shows that Bolsonarismo is a far-right movement … that has put down deep roots in Brazilian society,” said Bernardo Mello Franco, a political columnist for the Rio broadsheet O Globo. “His father [Jair Bolsonaro] was convicted and jailed for attempting a coup d’état [in 2022-23] yet despite this, his allies won elections across the country, and his son is the frontrunner in the second round of the presidential election.”Among the main drivers behind Bolsonaro’s strong showing:1.

Oct 5, 2026 7:12 AMPublished Oct 5, 2026 7:12 AMUpdated Oct 5, 2026 7:15 AMFormer Avalanche forward Victor Olofsson is lighting it up since returning to Vegas, scoring two goals and three points in his first three games. Victor Olofsson left Vegas looking for a fresh start. A little more than a year later, he's back with the Golden Knights and off to a pretty good start. Olofsson scored on the power play in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks. That gave him two goals and an assist through three games, putting him at a point per game to open the season. He's also fired seven shots on net. It's not a huge sample, but it's certainly an encouraging one for a player who has bounced around a bit since leaving Vegas after the 2024-25 season. Olofsson spent most of last season with the Colorado Avalanche. He played 60 games, scored 11 goals and finished with 25 points. One of those goals was the first hat trick of his NHL career, which came against the Blackhawks on Oct. 28. His time in Colorado ended when he was sent to Calgary as part of the trade that brought Nazem Kadri back to the Avalanche.

Brazil’s presidential race goes to second round as Flávio Bolsonaro leads incumbent Lula - The Guardian

Brazil’s presidential race will go to a second round after the far-right candidate, Flávio Bolsonaro, beat the incumbent leftwing president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, but failed to secure the outright majority he needed to avoid a runoff. With 99.9% of votes counted, the 45-year-old son of the disgraced former president, Jair Bolsonaro, had won 47%, meaning he will now face a 25 October showdown with his 80-year-old rival. Lula received 45.1%. Bolsonaro received 56.1m votes to Lula’s 53.8m. Bolsonaro will go into the second round as strong favourite and is likely to be boosted by the migration of votes from the election’s other rightwing candidates, who included Ronaldo Caiado, who secured 2.1%, and Renan Santos, who won 2.2%. Brazil’s far-right put in an even stronger than expected showing, with a succession of Bolsonarista politicians winning congressional or gubernatorial races. They included Jair Bolsonaro’s second son, Carlos Bolsonaro, and his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, who both won seats in the senate. Bolsonaro’s youngest son, Jair Renan, was elected to the lower house of congress.
