HD Hyundai Delivers World's First "Lashing-Free" Containership to CMA CGM - The Maritime Executive

South Korean shipbuilding group HD Hyundai is reporting the delivery of its first container vessel using the company’s newly developed "Lashing-Free" system that eliminates the need for workers to manually secure containers on board. It highlights benefits of increased capacity and ease of handling while also reporting that the system will be able to handle heavy weather and provide other benefits to the ships. The system was installed on a new containership built for CMA CGM, which underwent sea trials in September. The ship has a capacity of 13,000 TEU while using HD Hyundai’s hybrid-type Lashing-Free Technology. The ship is methanol-fueled and otherwise appears to use a conventional layout for the placement of containers above deck.

Mirror Particle is building a ‘world model’ of human behavior - TechCrunch

Startups that promise to predict how humans will behave are having a moment. Over the past year, Simile raised $200 million at a $2 billion valuation; Aaru raised $88 million at a $1 billion valuation; and Humans&, an AI startup that announced a massive $480 million seed round in January at a $4.48 billion valuation, launched Persimmon to model human behavior. The status quo for human behavior prediction today relies heavily on large language models (LLMs) that are prompted or fine-tuned to role-play as a target demographic. But two-year-old, San Francisco-based Mirror Particle thinks that approach is fundamentally broken.

Riot police fire teargas as 250,000 take part in schools protests across France - The Guardian

Police have fired teargas at protesters as more than 250,000 pupils, teachers and parents demonstrated across France on the biggest day yet of a campaign for better high school conditions that has been marred by often violent clashes with police. The French prime minister, Sébastien Lecornu, said at least 215 teenagers and 85 school staff had been injured since the protests began more than a fortnight ago, calling the figures “the heaviest toll in decades paid by the school system”. The country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, called key ministers to the Élysée Palace for talks on Tuesday night, French media reported. The interior ministry said 200,000 people had taken part in mainly peaceful marches in cities including Marseille, Nantes and Lyon on Tuesday, with 56,000 more joining the biggest demonstration in Paris. Organisers put the total at 450,000. Most passed off without serious incident, but some – including in Paris – ended in sporadic vandalism and running skirmishes with riot police, with officers firing teargas and carrying out baton charges to disperse protesters.

The Richest Countries In The World 2026 - WorldAtlas

Liechtenstein has about 40,000 residents and the highest GDP per capita (PPP) in the world in 2026, at $195,372. The two facts are connected. GDP per capita divides everything a country produces in a year by the number of people who live there, so a small population turns a modest total into an enormous average. Liechtenstein's factories and banks are staffed largely by commuters from Switzerland and Austria, and the ranking counts their output while leaving them out of the headcount. The same arithmetic lifts Luxembourg to $156,719 on the strength of its cross-border workforce, and it lifts Ireland to $159,129 because multinationals book their profits in Dublin before sending them home to shareholders abroad.

‘The future is bright’: breeding programme brings world’s heaviest insect back from the brink - The Guardian

The population of New Zealand’s endemic wētāpunga – believed to be the world’s heaviest insect – is officially “increasing” thanks to a groundbreaking breeding programme that has overseen the release of 11,000 insects into the wild. “The future of wētāpunga is looking bright,” said Dr Chris Green, an honorary researcher at the department of conservation, who documented the success of the project for the New Zealand Journal of Zoology. Green co-authored a report released on 2 October that outlines the success of the breeding programme. “Eleven thousand individuals for release is extraordinary and outstanding.”A female wētāpunga can weigh as much as a mouse. Its body can grow up to 10cm long (nearly 4in) and its leg span can be as wide as 20cm. It is the largest of 70 wētā species and was once found across parts of the North Island before predation from introduced species and habitat loss contributed to their decline. By the 1990s, they were considered “endangered” and are now presumed extinct in the wild on New Zealand’s mainland. The insects reside primarily on a smattering of predator-free islands in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf and off the coast of Northland.
