My Son Opened My World to What Matters - The Sunday Paper
Lorena Zenteno Villa reflects on mothering a teen with Down syndrome and the community that gives her and other parents of kids with disabilities a sense of belonging. Listen to this article.0:00/600.272041There was a time when my life fit neatly inside a map I had drawn for myself. I was a lawyer in Chile, working in the judiciary, in a world of rules, procedures, and predictable careers. I knew who I was there. I knew what came next. Then Noah came into my life. Noah has Down syndrome. He showed me that I had a lot to learn, and even more to unlearn: ideas about achievement, independence, and success I had absorbed long before my son was born. Noah, simply by being Noah, made me question these ideas. He opened my world to what mattered.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Crazy times in the world - Nanaimo News Bulletin
When formed in 1945 to replace the League of Nations after World War II, the objectives of the United Nations were to maintain international peace and security; to protect human rights; to deliver humanitarian aid; to support sustainable development; to uphold international law. It’s always a hypocritical contradiction when political leaders meet for their annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in a place designed to bring peace, but instead they invariably talk about wars and destruction. This year was no exception, with emphasis on participants in the current Persian Gulf War. As usual, great fanfare went to the U. S. president on opening day, making unvarnished threats to annihilate Iran, if a peace deal is not reached. Television cameras showed a packed U. N. General Assembly Hall; the seating capacity is for delegations of six representatives to each of 193 member states, and most of those 1,158 seats were filled.
