After Two Decades of Counting Bikes at the Ironman World Championship, I’ve Noticed a Few Things - Triathlete
Published October 13, 2026 03:28PMHow we reported: Editors from Triathlete, alongside other media outlets and tri industry reps have sent counters to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, to count bikes and bike components at the Ironman World Championship for decades. This year, former pro and tri bike expert T. J. Tollakson assisted in counting power meters, while managing editor Abby Levene counted wheelsets. I worked the first shift of the bike count at the 2026 Hawaii Ironman World Championship, and I’ve been part of the bike count at the world champs going back to 2006. You see a lot of trends come and go in that time, and some that stick. Sure, the winning bike brand is the headline grabber, but the most interesting stuff lies way beneath the surface.

At the same time, the threat of further disruptions is adding to supply concerns that have helped drive the metal’s rally.

Rory McIlroy’s newest sponsorship includes an insane travel perk - GOLF.com
Rory McIlroy's newest sponsor is sprinkling in a mind-blowing, first-of-its-kind travel perk for the grand slam winner. Most of life as a professional golfer is glamorous. Travel is not. For those lucky enough to ply their trade in golf, life on the road includes some version of the same experience every week: hotels, rental homes, airports, rental car lines, lost bags, and enough credit card points to fill an ocean liner. And among that group, travel is viewed one way: as a necessary evil, a thing that comes with the pursuit of a lifelong dream. Hell, even for those in pro golf with the means to pay for every travel luxury, the goal isn’t enjoyment of life on the road. It’s to eliminate friction, to take the hardships of the “road” out of “life on the road” — an annoyance rendered moot by private planes and private chefs and private homes and personal assistants. Then on Tuesday morning, golf travel became something else altogether. Not a nuisance or a necessary evil or a nothingburger, but a luxury. And it arrived via a totally mind-bending travel perk. Actually, via two of them. The news arrived in the form of an ordinary press release.

Longer journeys, same dangersOn the Atlantic route to the Canary Islands, arrivals fell 62 per cent between 2024 and 2025, yet recorded deaths and disappearances barely changed – 1,172 compared with 1,215. Canadians are still boycotting Las Vegas. The Sin City slump is now a major election issue - CBC
Canadian travel to Las Vegas continues to crater amid U. S. President Donald Trump's attacks on Canada, and the tourism slump in Sin City has become a major midterm election issue. Nevada Democrats are trying to capitalize on the decline, blaming Trump's trade war and threats toward Canada — the state's largest source of international tourists. "The Trump Slump is real, and Las Vegas tourism is tanking," the party said in one of its campaign messages ahead of the November vote in this crucial swing state. "Nevadans are struggling under Trump's tourism crisis," is another line the party has deployed as it puts the fractured relationship with Canada front and centre in this election. Pedestrians cross an overpass along the Las Vegas Strip, with the Trump International Hotel visible in the background. Nevada Democrats are trying to capitalize on the economic fallout from Trump's trade war with Canada, which they blame for hurting tourism.

Roller-coasters at Canada’s Wonderland, La Ronde shut down as precaution after deadly incident in Georgia - CP24
Two Canadian amusement parks, including Canada’s Wonderland, say they are closing down roller-coasters “out of an abundance of caution” following a deadly incident at a Six Flags park near Atlanta. In a statement, Grace Peacock, a spokesperson for Canada’s Wonderland, confirmed that both Behemoth and Leviathan are currently closed. “The safety of our guests and team members remains one of our highest priorities,” Peacock’s statement read. Canada’s Wonderland became a Six Flags property back in 2023 after the amusement park’s owner Cedar Fair merged with the theme park giant. It is unclear when the two roller-coasters are expected to reopen. In a statement, Montreal amusement park La Ronde also confirmed a roller-coaster closure in the wake of the incident in Georgia. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident at Six Flags Over Georgia and extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone affected,” an emailed statement from a spokesperson read. “At La Ronde, the safety of our guests and employees is our highest priority.
