The Herald's weekly entertainment picks - goSkagit

Looking to be entertained from Thursday, Oct. 8, through Wednesday, Oct. 14? Check out the Skagit Valley Herald’s weekly recommendations. OCT. 8-JAN. 10‘Surge: A Geography of Flow’The Museum of Northwest Art’s “Surge” exhibition series returned Oct. 3 with “Surge: A Geographic Flow,” which was developed in collaboration with the Skagit Climate Science Consortium. Inspired by the December 2025 floods, climate scientists and local artists were brought together to examine how climate change is reshaping the movement of water, people, plants, animals and the ecosystem of the region. The art installations are inspired by peer-reviewed climate research and examine topics such as salmon survival, forest ecology, wildfire science, hydrology, habitats, plant pathology, coastal geomorphology and marine microorganisms. A September news release from the museum states, “Rather than prescribing solutions, ‘Surge’ instead exists to create space for dialogue and shared understanding.”The exhibit will run until Jan. 10. More information is available at monamuseum.org/surge-2026. OCT.

Being A "Fangirl" Used To Scare Me, But The Anime Community Has Changed My Life - Refinery29

Photo via @angelinebarion. Fangirls (and fandoms in general) are changing the entertainment industry as we know it. They’re shaping stories, dictating marketing and changing the trajectory of franchises by speaking up about things they love most. After the live-action Sonic's animation style was criticised by fans online, Paramount and Sega scrambled to change it. That's the impact fans can have. But growing up, being seen as a fangirl felt too vulnerable. I can’t remember being a vocal, diehard fan of anything from the ages of 14 to 24 — which also happens to be peak fangirl age. 14-year-old me was so adamant about pursuing a "cool girl" image that she never realised the belonging, friendship, and community she was so desperate for were tucked between all the interests she never admitted to having. She didn’t understand that the "cool girl" doesn’t have defining parameters. She simply makes her own. In the past two years, my admiration has only grown for people who say that they love something (fan-mantically) with their entire chest. Now, I’m in the same boat, and I wouldn’t change a thing. All it took was a trial by fire to overcome my fear of being a fangirl.

Who Won August and September: Original Films or Franchises? - The Entertainment Strategy Guy | Substack

(Welcome to the Entertainment Strategy Guy, a newsletter on the entertainment industry and business strategy. I write a weekly Streaming Ratings Report and a bi-weekly strategy column, along with occasional deep dives into other topics, like today’s article. Please subscribe.)I just heard someone say that if you’re reading a pundit or data analyst, and they don’t tell you that they got anything wrong, they’re not a pundit but an “influencer”. I agree with that. You have to tell your audience when you get things wrong, or they won’t (or shouldn’t) trust you as much. Today, we’ve got another edition of “What I Got Right, What I Got Wrong”. In general, I’m patting myself on the back (and patting very hard) about a few things like IP at the box office, LIV golf, horror films, crowdfunding movies, superheroes, and old people going to the theaters. That said, I also made a couple of data mistakes on the streaming bubble popping and HBO’s datecdotes, so I’m not perfect. But first, I need your feedback...

Chuck Lorre Says Roseanne Barr ‘Fundamentally Hated’ Iconic Sitcom’s Writers - HuffPost

Television writer and producer Chuck Lorre is reflecting on his less-than-positive experience working with Roseanne Barr on early seasons of the sitcom “Roseanne.” Chatting with actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson on Tuesday’s episode of the “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, Lorre described his time with Barr as “malice,” which he partly blamed on her years on the stand-up circuit. “Roseanne hated that there were writers, fundamentally hated that other people wrote words that she would say,” he explained. “She was a stand-up comedian. She made herself a superstar based on her words, her writing. Then transition to a television show where [you] can’t do it alone. It’s impossible.”He went on to note: “That transition was not going to happen, so there was this built-in animosity between Rosie and the writing staff, any writing staff ... the premise of other people putting words in a stand-up comedian’s mouth is fundamentally flawed.”“Roseanne” aired on ABC from 1988 to 1997. Lorre, a New York native, joined the show’s writing team for two seasons, starting in 1990. Roseanne Barr, center, and the cast of “Roseanne” in 1989.
