An ultrashort laser pulse triggers collective excitations in an antiferromagnetic material, forming a wave. A new X-ray technique at SwissFEL allowed researchers to follow how these collective excitations, such as magnons, evolve. Credit: Paul Scherrer Institute PSI/Hiroki Ueda
Today's computer technology, based on silicon chips, is slowly reaching its physical limits. Components cannot be miniaturized indefinitely, and clock speeds cannot be increased indefinitely. At the same time, huge AI data centers are being built in many places, and these consume an immense amount of electricity. This is why scientists around the world are searching for novel materials that can replace or complement silicon technology and consume significantly less electricity.

L.A. makes it a crime for cannabis and tobacco retailers to sell nitrous oxide
Santiago Cruz, a junior at Bert Corona Charter High School in Pacoima, hopes to graduate alongside the classmates he grew up with, but worries that some of them may be derailed by nitrous oxide, the odorless gas that is being inhaled by young people and others as an illicit way to get high. He was among several students, supported by the San Fernando Valley Partnership, who appeared before the Los Angeles City Council last week in support of a city ban on the sale and distribution of nitrous oxide by cannabis and tobacco retailers. “When products that can be misused are easy to find in our neighborhoods, a classroom lesson can only do so much,” he said. “Reducing access is a responsibility we all need to share as a community.”The City Council unanimously approved a measure to prohibit the sale and distribution of nitrous oxide by cannabis and tobacco retailers. The state Legislature passed similar legislation this year, but a key difference is that violation of the state law is an infraction punishable by a fine, while a violation of the city ordinance is a criminal misdemeanor charge, punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, six months in jail, or both.

‘Am I an exerciser? Not in the slightest:’ Judi Dench on ‘joint-easing’ daily movement she relented to at 91 - Good Housekeeping
It appears Dame Judi Dench may not have traditionally been a fan of hardcore exercise. However, now in her 90s, she has revealed she’s taken up a gentle workout that she’s able to enjoy every day, from her very own garden. Now, we all know there are mental and physical benefits to regular movement, but Dame Judi’s choice is particularly good for older people and it’s gentle on the joints – swimming. Way back in 2011, it’s fair to say that Dame Judi appeared to be less than enthusiastic about working out. ‘Am I an exerciser? Not in the slightest. I drink Champagne. I’ll start exercising tomorrow,’ she told The Guardian. Fast forward to 2026, the now 91-year-old had changed her tune. In April, a new article by the paper explored Dame Judi’s magnificent garden, which included a swimming pool. It revealed that ‘all her family are keen swimmers,’ and that ‘they “make great use” of the pool on the lawn. She takes laps regularly.’ Karwai TangDame Judi at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2024. While not all of us are lucky enough to have a swimming pool in our back garden, most of us can usually find a local pool or even a patch of sea to take a dip in.

Rhodium embedded in a zeolite framework catalyzes hydroformylation - Chemical & Engineering News
The latest chemistry news, including important research advances, business and policy trends, chemical safety practices, career guidance, and more. Many commercial products, including plasticizers and detergents, rely on aldehyde building blocks. Hydroformylation constructs aldehydes from alkenes and synthesis gas—a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The industrial process currently uses rhodium-based catalysts that are expensive, involve toxic phosphine-containing ligands, and occur in the same phase as the reactants, which complicates catalyst recovery.
