76ers win opening game with Jaylen Brown and LeBron James, beating NBA champion Knicks on ring night

NEW YORK — The 76ers sent an opening-night message they’ll be a contender for the Knicks’ NBA title after adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, rallying for a 106-100 victory Tuesday. Tyrese Maxey scored 28 points and Brown had 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in his first game since being acquired from Boston. James began his NBA-record 24th season by finishing with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. The 76ers got three 3-pointers from Anfernee Simons and two from fellow newcomer Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, as the reserves took advantage of the open looks they got when the Knicks were caught focusing too much on the bigger names. Jalen Brunson scored 21 points but the NBA Finals MVP shot just 6 for 19 from the field. Brunson told fans inside Madison Square Garden in a pregame ceremony when the Knicks raised their NBA championship banner and received their rings that: “The joy that this city had this summer, we would love to replicate that again.”Get Court SenseKeep up with everything Celtics with news, commentary, and analysis from the Globe's all-star team. Nicolas Deslauriers also contributed a pair of goals for the Hurricanes (8-2-1), and Jackson Blake registered three helpers. Carolina’s goalie Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 14 of the 17 shots he faced for the reigning Stanley Cup champions, who were coming off a 3-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on Sunday. Linus Karlsson, Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Max Sasson scored a goal apiece for the Canucks (2-8-1), whose losing skid stretched to eight games (0-7-2). Goalie Leevi Merilainen provided a bright spot for Vancouver with 26 saves, and stopped a Sebastian Aho penalty shot attempt in the second period after Canucks centre Elias Pettersson was caught throwing his stick in an attempt to interrupt the centreman’s attack.
