Can Brock Purdy And Kyle Shanahan Solve The 49ers’ Mike Macdonald Problem? - FOX Sports

For the 49ers, Sunday’s game in Seattle is as big a Week 5 game as it can get. First place in the NFC West is on the line, and if the Niners can win it, they’ll have a multi-game lead in the division with tie-breaking wins over both the Rams and Seahawks. That’s a nice little cushion in the league’s most competitive divisional race. San Francisco-Seattle games are always bitter, but the 49ers carry an extra layer of resentment into this tilt after how last season ended, with the Seahawks defense stuffing their offense in a locker twice in three weeks, including a 41-6 beatdown in the NFC Divisional Round. It probably means a little more for 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy, who have spent the last few years tearing through defenses but always seem to struggle against Seahawks coach Mike MacDonald. In their first matchup, when MacDonald was calling plays for Baltimore’s defense, Purdy threw four interceptions in a 33-19 loss on Christmas night that ended his MVP campaign back in 2023.

Mike Macdonald On Seattle Sports 710AM: Test On Sam Darnold's Hip Shows 'Really Good News' - Seattle Seahawks

Not long after the Seahawks pulled off a thrilling comeback win over the Patriots on Wednesday, head coach Mike Macdonald provided another piece of positive news, saying the Seahawks got “great news” on quarterback Sam Darnold, who left the game with a hip injury. Darnold's hip was not fractured, Macdonald explained, but there were further tests to be done. A day later, after Darnold had undergone more tests, Macdonald again was able to share positive news during his weekly show on Seattle Sports 710AM. "We did get some results back," Macdonald said. "… We're still trying to figure out what the best prognosis is, but the hip is intact and it's good. It's more of like a muscle thing. So that's good, that's the good news. Now how long that is, we don't know yet, but really good news. I'm really happy for Sam. But it is painful now, I know it hasn't been an easy night for him. "Asked if Darnold has a chance to play in Seattle's Week 2 game in Arizona, Macdonald said he didn't know yet, but that his initial thought is that Drew Lock would play in Darnold's place. "I don't know yet," Macdonald said.
