(Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images)When I arrived at Cornell University as a freshman in 1994, I knew little about Greek life. I’d fallen in love with the school because of its famously “gorges” campus, its celebrated English faculty and a feeling of connection that washed over me during my admissions tour. Was I aware that Cornell had fraternities and sororities? Sure. But knowing this felt no different than knowing that it had four athletic centers and dozens of acres of fruit orchards. Greek life was simply an offering I could avail myself of — or not. Four months later, I found myself in a crowd of women gathered for sorority rush. It wasn’t a newfound passion for sororities that brought me there as much as inertia. While Greek life wasn’t the only social life on campus (then, as now, about one-third of Cornell’s undergraduates were Greek-affiliated), it was by far the most visible.

Police say a car has hit an Australian lawmaker, critically injuring her; the driver was arrested

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A car hit an Australian federal independent lawmaker on Monday, critically injuring her in a potentially deliberate act, police said. The driver was arrested. Helen Haines, 65, was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV outside her electoral district office in the city of Wangaratta in Victoria state, a police statement said. Police did not identify the victim, in accordance with privacy policy, but Haines’ family confirmed her identity in a media statement. The 43-year-old driver was arrested at the scene by a passerby. He will be interviewed in relation to the incident, police said. “A knife was located by police and seized from inside the Toyota,” police said. “At this stage, police are investigating as to whether this was an intentional act,” police added. Haines, who was first elected to the Parliament in 2019, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, police said. Authorities are concerned that there were more than 1,000 threats of violence against public figures in Australia in the past year and that being in public office has become more dangerous.

San Jacinto family warns of tree dangers after wind-blown branch critically injures adult son

Saturday, October 17, 2026 11:00PMAs Santa Ana winds are expected to return, a San Jacinto family is sharing its story after high winds led to a devastating injury that nearly killed their loved one. SAN JACINTO, Calif. (KABC) -- As red flag warnings prompted by Santa Ana winds remain in effect for parts of Southern California, a San Jacinto family is sharing its story after high winds led to a devastating injury that nearly killed their loved one. The remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel brought not only rain but also powerful winds across southwest Riverside County on Oct. 10. The strongest winds were reported in areas including Perris, Temecula, Hemet and San Jacinto. "It was scary," Alexandra Roldan said. "It was rocks, debris hitting the car and everything. A lot of cars were going like five miles per hour. "Roldan described the conditions as resembling a tornado. "It was a tornado, a mini tornado. That's all I was telling my daughter," she said. According to Roldan, the storm's winds caused a large tree branch to break off in the family's backyard and fall on her son, Richard, pinning and crushing him. "It was humongous. I tried moving it. It was so heavy.
