Already dealing with three local emergencies as it tries to recover from the destructive Norte fire and a surge in coastal erosion from two El Niño-related Pacific storms, San Clemente may now be facing damage from yet another climate-fueled emergency: a tornado. The possible twister whipped through a San Clemente golf course Wednesday evening, toppling or snapping off sections of trees and leaving a trail of green carcasses across the typically manicured park, according to videos and photos reviewed by The Times. It doesn’t appear anyone was injured. The National Weather Service said a team was headed out to the course Thursday to determine if the damage was caused by a tornado, but they had not yet reached consensus. “The cause is uncertain, it’s certainty wind-related, but it’s a matter of what kind of wind,” said Kyle Wheeler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego. “There’s been a couple of different storms that have moved through San Clemente.”Just before 6 p.m.

Severe storm causes damages in San Clemente; National Weather Service confirms no tornado
WEATHERSeveral trees came down as severe weather hit San Clemente. The National Weather Service confirmed, however, that a tornado did not touch down in the area. Friday, October 23, 2026 1:49AMSAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KABC) -- Several trees came down as severe weather hit San Clemente. The National Weather Service confirmed, however, that a tornado did not touch down in the area. The NWS sent personnel to survey the storm damage. They say that a severe thunderstorm pushed through the area around 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. Wednesday and believe winds most likely exceeded 58 mph. The storm uprooted trees. Former San Clemente Mayor Tim Brown recorded video while on the municipal golf course as the storm passed and captured uprooted trees and heavy rain. He said that the winds and rain came out of nowhere. Meteorologists on the ground say the storm's strong winds affected only a small area and that it was not a tornado. "Taking a look at weather data, discussing this with my colleagues, it looks like this is straight line wind damage. So we have just winds kind of came from the coast all the way up here.

Patriots pay price for missed opportunities along the way to losing to the Bears
“I know that was a big turning point in the game,” Maye said. “I know I let my team down.” The mistake, Maye’s first turnover in two weeks, had the Patriots playing catch-up for the rest of the game. The Bears scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive to extend their lead to 20-7 and, despite New England’s fight, held on to win. Enter EmailThe shorthanded Patriots — against a talented opponent on a short week, on the road, on a national stage — had their chances but didn’t have quite enough. Maye completed 24 of 31 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns, and also scrambled for 26 yards and a score. The pick marred his otherwise solid stat sheet. “It’s a thin margin when you play good teams,” coach Mike Vrabel said. “I know [Drake] would like that throw back to Eli, but I thought he really competed, whether that was running around or scrambling or finding good places to go with the football. He gave us a chance.

Same draft class, stellar play keep Drake Maye and Caleb Williams connected
That’s how it works when enticing prospects commence their NFL careers as high draft picks in the same year. They’re praised and picked apart during the absurdly prolonged buildup to the NFL Draft, which starts the engine for that either/or, are-we-sure-he’s-better-than-him debate. Thursday night, in their second career meeting and first in prime time, Williams and the Bears emerged victorious over Maye and the Patriots, 30-24. Both surpassed 300 yards passing. Both had stellar, and sometimes breathtaking, moments. Caleb Williams's 308 passing yards were spread among just five receivers. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe StaffWilliams completed 22 of 33 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Luther Burden III for four receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone. His first-quarter 58-yarder with Burden, which set up a D’Andre Swift 4-yard rushing touchdown to give the Bears a 10-0 lead, accounted for more passing yards than Maye had in the entire opening quarter (51).
