"We are here to give you something to believe in": the former Disco Elysium devs of Summer Eternal reveal new RPG Red Rooster, a game of fire, water and alternate selves

Earlier this month, the former Disco Elysium developers of worker co-operative studio Summer Eternal sent me a 500-page anthology describing their new game Red Rooster. It's a 3D, real-time, third-person RPG you could broadly style as a spiritual Disco successor, working in the tradition of Planescape: Torment and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, but which also owes much inspiration to Baldur's Gate 3 and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. It takes place in a magic realist, "our-world-adjacent", mightily flammable and divided river city called Arta-Tantor, created with Unreal Engine and housing a "physics-powered sandbox of objects you can individually move, manipulate – and burn. "
Here, you will live out the story of Redrick Roost, a convict serving a life sentence after accidentally rendering thousands of people catatonic by means of an "auto-meditation" headset. Much like Disco's Harry, Redrick has a whole world of characters in his head – a hallucinatory vacuum shop or "chicken coop" full of alternate selves or "roosters", who vie for dominance as the game goes on, affecting your dialogue options and abilities.

Ex-ZA/UM developers reveal Red Rooster, an "incendiary RPG" that is very intentionally not trying to be a "Disco Elysium successor" or "Disco-like"
Back in 2024, we heard about the formation of Summer Eternal: a new studio composed of Disco Elysium writer and world-builder, Argo Tuulik, and other veteran ZA/UM staff such as Dora Klindžić, Anastasia Ivanova, and Michael Oswell. Aleksandar Gavrilović, secretary of the Croatian Game Development Alliance, and Lenval Brown, Disco Elysium's narrator, are also part of the crew. Since then, we've heard nothing from the new collective, but earlier this month, the studio got in contact with me to gauge interest in the Summer Eternal Anthology, a 500-page physical book that's part-treatise on the cultural and labour impact of the video game industry, and part-development journal for its newly-announced "incendiary RPG", Red Rooster.

Zero Parades, The Successor To Disco Elysium, Has Been Confirmed For Switch 2
ZA/UM, the controversial studio behind Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, has confirmed that its next CRPG will launch on Switch 2 on 3rd November 2026. Zero Parades: Director's Cut is the studio's second outing and was released on PC in May of this year. The Director's Cut, which launched as a free update for owners on PC earlier this month, features several key improvements, including re-recorded English voiceover and a revamped inventory system.

"This non-profit will be the 'voice of the gamers'" - Former Disco Elysium devs break new ground with player- and developer-owned studio structure
"An experimental attempt to formalise community decision-making. " Elsewhere on the site, you can read a big reveal piece that outlines the new game from former Disco Elysium devs under the name of Summer Eternal - an "incendiary RPG" fusing the best bits of text-heavy isometric role-playing games with the world-building and player agency of an immersive sim. It's bold, it's ambitious, and it's still in development, and if it all comes off, it could be something really special.

Eternal Anima hands-on gameplay preview
One hour with Marvelous' new turn-based RPG. Recently, I visited Marvelous at its Shinagawa headquarters for a one-hour preview of its upcoming turn-based RPG Eternal Anima. As a disclaimer, attendees were gifted a bottle of sake with an Eternal Anima-themed label, presented in a special wooden box engraved with the game’s logo. The demo offered two save files set at points relatively close to each other in the story, both on normal difficulty (there are multiple difficulty options) during Chapter 3. The first let me explore a continent called Ambulis, including the forest village of La Boset, while the second picked up a little further along, after leaving the village and continuing toward a boss encounter. I started by returning to the ship to explore, where I found several rooms that appear to serve different purposes as the game progresses. Characters and certain mechanics seem to become available here at some point during the story. During the demo, I found a cauldron for “Concocting” (crafting) items, as well as a blacksmith where you can craft weapons, armor, accessories, and “M. O. S. Components” for M. O. S., the robotic companion in your party.

Preview: 'Eternal Anima' Returns To The Past To Create A Modern JRPG
Originally revealed in 2023 as a working title named Project Life is RPG, Marvelous didn't show too much of their new IP, but said they were creating a game that pays respect to the classics of the genre, along with some gorgeous concept art. Jump forward to this year, and Eternal Anima was officially unveiled in September's Nintendo Direct. A bunch of game industry veterans are working on this title, such as Katsuhisa Higuchi (Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears), Kazushige Nojima (Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts), and Keisuke Makino (Metaphor: ReFantazio, Persona 5), to name a few.
