News (Copyright 2025 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved.)As National School Bus Safety Week gets underway, Virginia State Police is reminding drivers to stop for school buses and students and to follow all bus safety laws. The awareness week runs from Oct. 19 through Oct. 23, and this year’s theme is “Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes.”Recommended VideosAccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, less than 1% of all traffic fatalities involve children on school vehicles. However, the risk increases when a child is getting on or off a school bus. Just this month, on Oct. 7, a child was injured after getting off a school bus on Route 23 in Scott County. A dump truck swerved to avoid the bus and hit the juvenile. The driver, Myron L. McAmis, 64, of Chuckey, Tennessee, was charged with reckless driving. In another incident on Oct. 12, a school bus in Tazewell County was hit as it stopped to let children off on Route 460. A Subaru Outback behind the bus stopped, but was rear-ended by a Subaru Legacy, which pushed the Outback into the bus. The driver of the Legacy, Leslie A. Varney, 31, of North Tazewell, was charged with reckless driving.
