If you weren’t already aware of the president’s fixation on oil as a solution to the world’s problems, his recent social media bloviation on Greenland should make it evident (“Trump says oil, gas, and mineral exploration in Greenland is set to begin. It’s not that simple,” BostonGlobe.com, Oct. 14). In the aftermath of his imperialist usurpation of Venezuela’s oil, he set his sights on Iran. As that war imploded, he resorted to a huge oil deal with President Vladimir Putin of Russia aimed at staunching the rise in gas prices that his war of choice caused. Now he’s moved on to Greenland. The fact that Greenland has never produced significant amounts of oil and gas is beside the point. What’s relevant is that President Trump’s obsession with acquiring ever more fossil fuel resources regardless of the cost in lives or geopolitical relationships is skewing both energy policy and foreign policy. Combined with his ideological antagonism for renewable energy, his monomania for oil and gas has left our nation years behind China, our strongest adversary, in the necessary transition to renewable energy sources that do not exacerbate the already alarming warming of the atmosphere and oceans.

Police say a car has hit an Australian lawmaker, critically injuring her; the driver was arrested

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A car hit an Australian federal independent lawmaker on Monday, critically injuring her in a potentially deliberate act, police said. The driver was arrested. Helen Haines, 65, was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV outside her electoral district office in the city of Wangaratta in Victoria state, a police statement said. Police did not identify the victim, in accordance with privacy policy, but Haines’ family confirmed her identity in a media statement. The 43-year-old driver was arrested at the scene by a passerby. He will be interviewed in relation to the incident, police said. “A knife was located by police and seized from inside the Toyota,” police said. “At this stage, police are investigating as to whether this was an intentional act,” police added. Haines, who was first elected to the Parliament in 2019, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, police said. Authorities are concerned that there were more than 1,000 threats of violence against public figures in Australia in the past year and that being in public office has become more dangerous.
