Caribbean scientists document uncharted deep-sea waters in Trinidad and Tobago - news - Mongabay
In a milestone for Caribbean science, researchers recently conducted one of the most comprehensive surveys ever undertaken in the deep-sea waters off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago. It marks the first time a team of predominantly Caribbean scientists have worked on deep-ocean exploration in the region, according to expedition leader Diva Amon, a deep-sea ecologist and Trinidad and Tobago native. The expedition team collected more than 700 specimens, including many Amon believes will be identified as new species, and found 25 cold seep ecosystems formed by methane and other gases emanating from the ocean floor. Amon said she hopes the data gathered on the expedition will be used by decision-makers in Trinidad and Tobago to improve stewardship of the country’s waters, which are threatened by oil and gas drilling, plastic pollution and climate change. During a recent monthlong expedition, a team of scientists conducted one of the most comprehensive surveys ever undertaken in the deep waters of Trinidad and Tobago, a dual-island nation located in the southern Caribbean Sea.

ETHAN CAIRNS/The Canadian PressTensions rose on the campaign trail in British Columbia on Monday as B. C. NDP Leader David Eby scrambled to explain comments he made earlier in the day about the tragedy at CFB Wainwright, which followed suggestions that some BC Conservatives harbour separatist sentiments. BC Conservative interim leader Lorne Doerkson called the remarks unacceptable. Later in the day speaking in Hope, B. C., Mr. Eby said he didn’t use the tragedy for political gain and will steer clear of the topic through to voting day. “Let me say unreservedly I would never, ever use the sacrifice of these young men, the grief of their families for political advantage to attack another party,” Mr. Eby said. Earlier, he referenced the loss of the four soldiers lives in the fire as being “our true heroes” who had put their lives on the line to defend Canada. “What we can do for them is stand up for a united Canada, to stand up for our country,” he said. Man who snatched Peachy the flamingo from Las Vegas hotel exhibit found guilty of animal cruelty - CP24
Images released by the Las Vegas Police Department show an Ontario tourist taking a flamingo, allegedly removed from its habitat, back to his hotel room. LAS VEGAS -- A Canadian man was convicted of animal cruelty charges Monday for snatching a flamingo named Peachy from its enclosure at an iconic Las Vegas hotel. Prosecutors said it was a malicious prank while a lawyer for the tourist insisted it was drunken foolishness not meant to harm the bird. Prosecutors said tourist Mitchell Fairbarn hurt and frightened the 27-year-old Chilean flamingo when he took it from its habitat at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino and carried the squawking bird to his room March 3. Defence attorney Josh Tomsheck told jurors at trial in a Nevada court that the man deeply regretted the “bad decisions” he made while intoxicated. After about five hours of deliberations, jurors returned convictions on felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty counts against the Ontario, Canada, man. Mitchell Fairbarn, left, appears in court with his attorney Josh Tomsheck, during jury selection for his trial at the Regional Justice Center on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, in Las Vegas.
