100 Years Ago, 1926: Stables within the city are gradually disappearing and the ones left are few and far between. This fact was brought to light yesterday by a Times reporter who made a canvass of several wards in the lower section of the city before he found a place where a stranger could find a stall for his horse, if there are any strangers who own horses. Hundreds of small buildings that formerly housed the Dobbin families have been converted into garages and not a few have had a little more space added to them and are now listed as a cozy little home. It is estimated that there are less than 300 horses all told in the city as compared with nearly 2,000 automobiles, which explains why so many former stables now house the family flivver.
75 Years Ago, 1951: South Chester Methodist Church, Third and Jeffrey streets, will observe its 80th anniversary Sunday with special homecoming services, according to Rev. Ellsworth L. Jennings, pastor. During the winter of 1865, a number of persons, mostly members of Trinity Church, met at the home of William Gallow, Fifth Street and Central Avenue, and organized a Sunday school, with Gallow being elected superintendent.
