Climate towers cool orchards with ancient Persian technology - FreshPlaza
In the Netherlands, climate towers based on an ancient principle are being trialed as a way to counter drought and heat in orchards. At the Fruit Research Centre in Randwijk, in the Betuwe region of Gelderland, Catyra's towers work on a technique that is old but still relevant, says Marcel Kers. Marcel is a cofounder of the company and is running the trial in Randwijk, supported by the Knowledge and Innovation Program for Fruit Growing and by Fruitpact. The towers are four meters tall. They draw in dry, warm air at the top, which passes two rings of misting nozzles, absorbs water, becomes heavier, and flows downward. No pump is needed. The climate near the ground becomes cooler and more humid, which keeps the crop's stomata open so the plant can continue photosynthesis. © Fruitpact "Towers like these have been used for a very long time in buildings in ancient Persia, and really across the Middle East," says Marcel. "Masonry shafts run from the roof down to the lower floors. Wet sheets are hung at the top, which humidifies the air and makes it heavier. Down below, that provides cooling. No fan is needed.

American Airlines Expects a 2026 Loss. How It Plans to Turn a Profit in 2027.
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said Thursday he believed the carrier could be profitable in 2027 even as it is battered by soaring jet fuel costs. “We think we can be profitable next year,” he said during a call with analysts. “And that's driven by what we've seen this year. We've had fuel expenses now grow $7 billion over the course of the year. But for that, we'd be solidly profitable.”
