‘That’s crazy’: Legendary environmentalist David Suzuki speaks out against Braford’s plan for Toronto’s water

World renowned environmentalist and activist David Suzuki spoke out Wednesday about mayoral candidate Brad Braford’s plan for Toronto’s water and how it is managed, saying a fundamental need should not be seen as an avenue to make money. Bradford’s plan involves lowering water bills while making Toronto Water a municipal corporation, like Toronto Hydro, which could then take on debt to fund infrastructure projects, rather than them being funded by the comparatively meagre revenue from water bills alone. Critics say the plan will open the door to privatization and eventually higher water prices.

Jeff McIntosh/The Canadian PressAlberta Premier Danielle Smith is urging separatist factions within her United Conservative Party to accept the results of Monday’s referendum or leave the party if they’re unwilling to do so. Ms. Smith, in a pre-taped video posted to social media, stressed the need for unity within the province’s conservative movement and warned that party infighting would deliver the October, 2027, election to the Alberta NDP. But Ms. Smith was not clear about what measures she’s willing to take to smother separatist leanings inside her party. She said she expects all party nominees and members of her provincial board and constituency associations to be committed to “a strong Alberta within a united Canada. “As a party, we cannot permit the next year to be one of internal division and endless debates about separation, when Albertans have spoken so clearly against it,” Ms. Smith said in the video posted Wednesday morning.
