UN aid chief Tom Fletcher: Preventing world war must be a priority - The National
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has issued a stark warning that world war is a genuine concern, urging immediate efforts to de-escalate. In an interview from his office at the UN building in New York, Mr Fletcher said he worried that humanity is at a precipice. "I worry we are losing control. Humans are losing control of weapons, of AI, of the climate and increasingly of the global economy, which is being placed on a war footing," he said. Mr Fletcher, the UN undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief co-ordinator (Ocha), added that these forces and “different choke points propel us towards a much bigger war”. When asked if this meant a world war, he responded “our biggest job in the coming year, the biggest job for the next [UN] secretary general is preventing World War Three". Some progress made, more neededWhile the High-Level Debate at the UN General Assembly may seem far removed for many outside the orbit of the UN, the reality is that what happens in New York in September matters for people around the world - especially the most vulnerable who need aid, support or protection.
