Israel launches crackdown in West Bank city after deadly attack
TEL AVIV -- The Israeli military began a sweeping crackdown in the West Bank city of Hebron overnight on Saturday, evicting hundreds of families and demolishing buildings a day after Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers in the occupied territory. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed to retaliate for the deadly shooting, which took place just days before a pivotal national election and against a backdrop of intensifying violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Netanyahu is neck and neck in opinion polls with a bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief of staff and his leading challenger in the first major vote in Israel since the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, attacks ignited war in the Gaza Strip. On Saturday, Israeli forces were searching homes, making arrests and using loudspeakers to tell residents in Hebron’s Deir Baha neighborhood to leave, said Yousef Jabari, the city’s mayor. At least 2,000 Palestinians live in the area, many of whom have already fled, he said. “This is not only collective punishment, it’s election propaganda,” Jabari said.

Three big men frontcourt and center as part of Celtics’ bounceback win over the Knicks
At his press conference after the Celtics’ 107-103 win over the Knicks on Friday night, coach Joe Mazzulla thought he was being asked a question about the play of centers Neemias Queta and Mitchell Robinson when he interrupted to include third-string big man Luka Garza in the discussion, too. Queta and Robinson collected two fouls apiece as New York took the lead in the opening 10 minutes. But Mazzulla did not hesitate turning to Garza, whose impact was immediate but not surprising. Garza closed the first quarter by hitting a 3-pointer and drawing an offensive foul, then carried that momentum into the second when he came up with a steal, converted a putback layup, and added another 3-pointer. A 2-point deficit had transformed into a 31-27 lead when Garza exited after a stint of 3:30. He never returned, but his impact in that brief segment was significant.
