Beauty giants target ‘Ozempic face’ as boom in obesity drugs opens new market

Published: October 21, 2026 at 9:14a.m. EDTLONDON/PARIS -- Swiss skincare firm Galderma, Brazilian cosmetics group Natura and beauty giant L’Oreal are testing treatments for consumers worried about facial sagging and volume loss, looking to capitalize on a growing market tied to the boom in obesity drugs. The companies are targeting concerns known as “Ozempic face,” a term that emerged as the diabetes drug became widely associated with weight loss. Experts say the loss of facial volume is linked to rapid weight loss rather than GLP-1 drugs themselves. GLP-1 drugs, such as Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound, help people to lose weight by mimicking a hormone that keeps the stomach feeling full. Along with gastrointestinal side effects, the resulting rapid weight loss can also lead to loose skin on the face and body. Pfizer estimates the obesity drug market could reach US$150 billion in annual sales by 2030, helping create a potentially lucrative opportunity for skincare and medical esthetics companies as more patients seek treatments for skin laxity and facial volume loss after rapid weight loss.

Netflix slides as weak outlook deepens worries on viewership, revenue growth

Published: October 21, 2026 at 8:56a.m. EDTAlicia Reese, SVP equity research, media & entertainment at Wedbush Securities, joins BNN Bloomberg to dive deeper into Netflix's earnings. Netflix shares dropped six per cent in premarket trading on Wednesday, after the company’s tepid profit and advertising outlook deepened investor concerns about slowing viewership and revenue growth amid stiff competition in the streaming industry. The stock has declined more than 26 per cent this year and, if current losses hold, the streaming giant is set to shed about US$19 billion in market value. The share performance underscores the mounting challenges facing Netflix — from losing a bidding war for Warner Bros Discovery earlier this year to defending its paid subscription model against free digital rivals and competing in an increasingly consolidated streaming market. Latest updates on company news hereAs viewers shift toward free, user-generated platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, Netflix is also contending with changing preferences in favor of short-form video over premium content.

End of an era? How the Hermes Birkin bag is losing its scarcity appeal

Published: October 21, 2026 at 8:44a.m. EDTPARIS/LONDON -- London-based Cai Baochun used to make a hefty profit reselling Hermes’ famed Birkin bags for more than double their US$10,000 retail price. Now he has stopped stockpiling them as second-hand prices fall. “I don’t want to lose money,” said Cai, who started selling the bags on online platforms such as Vestiaire Collective and on social media in 2020 and rode a pandemic-era luxury spending boom. The resale value of unworn Birkins sold as second-hand online has dropped by more than $6,000 from its 2022 peak, he said. The decline reflects a broader shift in the market for one of luxury’s most exclusive products whose appeal and success have been driven by scarcity. Increasing supply of Birkin bags in the second-hand market is depressing resale premiums, according to resellers, industry consultants and analysts interviewed by Reuters, raising questions about a strategy that helped propel Hermes to become one of the world’s most profitable luxury companies. Named after the late British-French actor Jane Birkin, the handbag has been central to Hermes’ performance.

Russia says it will send first diesel cargo to U.S. on Thursday

Published: October 21, 2026 at 8:40a.m. EDTThe Atlantic’s David Frum discusses Donald Trump’s proposed diesel deal with Russia and how it’s being perceived by Americans heading into midterm elections. MOSCOW -- Russia will dispatch its first tanker with diesel for the United States on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said, according to the Vedomosti news outlet, after a deal with U. S. President Donald Trump. Russia lifted its self-imposed ban on diesel exports on October 9, introduced to tackle domestic shortages triggered by Ukrainian drone attacks on refineries, after reaching the deal with Trump to supply diesel to global markets. Novak said on Wednesday the vessel will carry 40,000 metric tons of the fuel, adding that the paperwork on the fuel supply is nearing its completion, according to media reports. He did not name the port from which the cargo will be delivered. “Additional shipments will follow, of course. There were agreements reached between the two leaders. We will meet the United States’ needs, to the extent of our capabilities,” RIA news agency quoted Novak as saying.
