Monero futures are again heating with leverage, raising volatility risks
Oct 21, 2026, 4:57 a.m. EDT2 min readMonero futures are heating up, posing volatility risks. (Jakub Żerdzicki/Unsplash)SummaryMonero futures open interest has surpassed $300 million, nearing January’s record of about $320 million and increasing the risk of a sharp, liquidation-driven price move. Open interest has also climbed to a five-week high of 515,730 XMR as monero’s spot price recently topped $600, suggesting leveraged bets are growing alongside the rally. A similar buildup in January preceded a 66 percent plunge, when monero fell from about $790 to below $300 as long positions were forcibly closed. Leveraged bets are building up in monero (XMR) futures, raising the odds of a sharp, sudden move in the price. Monero (XMR) is a cryptocurrency built for privacy. Its transactions are hard to trace and at the market cap of $10.9 billion, it is the second-largest privacy coin in the world. Notional open interest, or the dollar value of the number of active monero futures bets, has risen past $300 million, approaching the January peak of around $320 million, according to data source SoSoValue. Futures are contracts that let traders bet on a coin’s price without owning it.
