Carlos Simon’s double concerto pleasant but safe on its first outing

Most of composer Carlos Simon’s music is rooted in stories. To name a few, there’s the shattering “Requiem for the Enslaved,” which pays posthumous homage to the over 200 men, women, and children sold by Georgetown University in 1838, the ecstatic, gospel-infused “Good News Mass,” and two upcoming opera commissions — one from our very own Boston Lyric Opera, and one from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. His “Double Concerto Suite,” co-commissioned by the BSO and given its first local performance on Thursday night under the baton of music director Andris Nelsons, is allegedly his first work without any external narrative or programmatic material whatsoever. “I encourage you to come up with your own narrative,” the orchestra’s composer chair told the audience. The five-movement piece took some inspiration from Baroque partitas and dance suites such as J. S. Bach’s for solo violin and cello, which are respectively repertoire cornerstones of the intended soloists for Simon’s suite: violinist Hilary Hahn and cellist Seth Parker Woods. The two approached Simon’s piece with the same no-frills elegance they give to solo Bach.
