Scientists Collected Deep-Sea Rocks. They Spontaneously Caught Fire in The Lab. - ScienceAlert

Scientists investigating the possibility of a 'gold rush' on the bottom of the ocean have hit upon an unforeseen 'landmine'. Researchers at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) are now warning that some deep-sea minerals may spontaneously combust when they are brought to the surface. In 2022, that happened to two samples of metal-sulfide rocks collected from the deep seafloor. The event caused temperatures above 100 °C in the lab and completely oxidized the original samples. An article on the discovery, published in Scientific Reports, is being shared early, before full editing, to give the public faster access to new research. According to the USGS, this is a "potential hazard that could merit special consideration if deep-sea mining of seafloor massive sulfide deposits moves forward". "The production of heat through exothermic reactions has not been investigated in seafloor massive sulfide deposits but has the potential to cause rapid onset fires on ships," claims the recent article.

8 common food additives linked to high blood pressure and heart disease - Science Daily

Common food preservatives found across the processed food supply may be associated with a greater risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, according to research published in the European Heart Journal. The study was led by Dr. Mathilde Touvier, a research director at INSERM (the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research), and Anaïs Hasenböhler, PhD student, both from the Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team at the Université Sorbonne Paris Nord and Université Paris Cité, France.

High-end sports car spontaneously ignites in police storage after crash that killed OC influencer

Staff Writer Oct. 19, 2026 11:59 AM PT The wreckage of a McLaren 720S involved in a deadly crash that killed two people in Irvine spontaneously ignited and caught fire last week inside a secure facility, Irvine police said in a statement. The 2019 McLaren had been driven Sept. 13 by James Wehr, 27, the co-founder of a popular Instagram page called South OC Cars and Coffee, when police said the car took off at a “high rate of speed” from a red light, skipped over a curb and struck a tree. Alexis Helena Kramer, 22, of Florida was a passenger in the high-performance car. Police said the car split in two and caught fire during the collision. Wehr and Kramer died in the crash. Irvine police on Saturday said the wreckage of the car was being stored in a secured tow facility in Costa Mesa that is often contracted by police to store damaged vehicles. On Wednesday — 31 days later— the front section of the vehicle appeared to spontaneously catch on fire, authorities said. Security video of the facility, released by police, shows a small flame suddenly appearing in the dark room of the storage facility, eventually growing into a fire and filling the room with smoke.
