Shuttering of Sportsnet 960 a devastating blow for Calgary sports - Yahoo News Canada
Towards the end of the Calgary Flames season, there were often times when the Sportsnet crew and I were the only media at practices. The Sportsnet 960 crew, from Pat Steinberg to Meaghan Mikkelson to Derek Wills, were there every single morning. Guys like Logan Gordon, Matt Rose and George Rusic were regulars, too, whether that was in the press box during games or in the locker room for scrums. When you turned on the radio in the morning, you got three hours of local content on The Big Show. The afternoon show came on at 1 p.m. before Steinberg hosted Flames Talk, often teeing up the Flames game that followed. On game nights, Steinberg would stick around long after the rest of us in the media had gone home to host the post-game call-in show. Nowhere else in the city did you get that much locally sourced and produced sports content. Not even close. And now, none of it will be on the air. Pat Steinberg, as seen in this file photo. On Tuesday morning, the news dropped like a bomb that Rogers Communications Inc. had made the decision to shut down Sportsnet 960 and 660 NewsRadio.

Au Revoir, Art Basel Paris
French museums and galleries are shuttering before nationwide protests tomorrow. Plus: What does it mean for a woman artist to “reach her prime”? Leave it to Art Basel Paris to close early during a movement for education equality and working conditions … “in the interest of safeguarding our visitors.” The Louvre, Gagosian, and other museums and galleries also announced plans to shutter during tomorrow’s nationwide protests. One artist coalition calls the fair’s cancellation a victory for the fight to defend culture: “Let us keep the movement going.” Staff Writers Anna Lee and Rhea Nayyar have the story. Across the pond, Ed Simon reflects on the imperative to protect arts and culture here in the United States on the centenary of the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning, founded as a beacon of education and expression that “seems virtually utopian today.” Then, we have the artists keeping that spirit alive: Read on for Leah Triplett Harrington’s review of a show that deconstructs sexist notions of recognition and market success for women artists over age 75, the painter who adorns Phoebe Bridgers’s guitars, and more.—Lakshmi Rivera Amin, associate editor, books
