Father arrested after 4-year-old fatally shoots himself in face in South Texas, sheriff's office says

Watch Eyewitness News and ABC13 originals around the clockSunday, October 18, 2026 8:25PMCAMERON COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A family is mourning, and a father is facing a felony charge after a 4-year-old died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in South Texas, according to the Cameron County Sheriff's Office. The accidental shooting happened on Oct. 1 when the child's parents entered a store and left him inside the family's car by himself, the sheriff's office said in a release. According to investigators, the child's father left an unsecured handgun in the center console of the vehicle. The child then found the gun and accidentally caused it to fire, leading to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, the sheriff's office said. Later, investigators were called to the Harlingen Medical Center, and they began investigating how the 4-year-old, who was rushed to the hospital by his parents, ended up shot in the face. The sheriff's office said it pieced together the tragic incident after obtaining statements, reviewing camera footage, and collecting other evidence.

A man's neck was broken in an L.A. County jail. His family is suing the Sheriff's Department

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy working as a guard at Twin Towers Correctional Facility used force against inmate Jeffrey Fairchild, allegedly smashing him face-first into a metal window frame and causing him to fall to the concrete floor, according to federal monitors overseeing conduct by deputies in L. A. County jails. The force of the impact left Fairchild a quadriplegic after the September 2024 incident, his family members said. He was taken to a hospital and remained under close medical care until April 21, 2025, when he suffered a heart attack and died at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach. In the wake of Fairchild’s death, his family members filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County, Eric Barraza — the deputy who the monitors said used force against Fairchild — and a number of unnamed deputies who were working in the jail that day. The suit, filed in U. S. District Court in Los Angeles, claims that Barraza used excessive and unreasonable force, and that Fairchild’s death from complications stemming from the incident was wrongful.

Two Brockton brothers sentenced for staged robbery at bank where one worked

A pair of Brockton brothers were sentenced to four months in prison Monday for stealing nearly $200,000 from a credit union where one of them worked, federal prosecutors said. Jenel Flounoury, 30, and Justin Flounoury, 34, were also each sentenced to three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a joint restitution of $197,146, according to the office of Leah B. Foley, US Attorney for Massachusetts. The two pleaded guilty in July to one count of conspiracy to commit larceny from a credit union in federal court in Boston, prosecutors said in a statement. According to Foley’s office, Jenel and Justin Flounoury conspired to stage a robbery of Energy Credit Union in West Roxbury, where Jenel worked as a teller. On Sept. 24, 2024, Justin left his job in South Boston early and was driven to the credit union, the statement said. Wearing a hat, sunglasses, mask and dark clothing, Justin went to the teller window where Jenel was working and handed him a note that read “Hand it Over,” officials said.
