Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth visited Dayton Tuesday, Oct. 20, to declare that those serving on the front line have never depended more on those who toil on the nation’s production lines. Warfighters rely on the technician, the engineer, the welder, the IT professional and their colleagues, Hegseth said in a 24-minute address in the newest maintenance, repair and overhaul hangar built by Sierra Nevada Corp. at Dayton International Airport, in the shadow of a Boeing 747-8i the company has modified for service as an Air Force “Survivable Airborne Operations Center.”“Never forget the direct line you have to those on the front line,” Hegseth told an assembly of hundreds of SNC’s 420 Dayton workers. More workers watched the address remotely from other SNC hangars and offices. The company has built four huge 90,000-square-foot hangars to modify big military planes, adapting them for modern warfare with new communication suites and other upgrades.
