WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. (CNS) -- A second rabies-positive raccoon was found in the Westlake Village area, Los Angeles County health officials confirmed on Friday, prompting renewed warnings for residents to avoid contact with the animals. NOTE: The video in the player above is from a previous reportIn early October, the county Department of Public Health announced the discovery of the first rabid raccoon in the county since 1973, located in the backyard of a Westlake Village home. Health officials said Friday the second rabid raccoon was also found in a Westlake Village backyard, in same general area where the first was located. The most recently discovered raccoon appeared sick and aggressive, but two people at a worksite in the area may have been exposed and are receiving follow-up care, according to the county. "The detection of rabies in another raccoon is an important reminder to never touch, handle, or feed any wild animals, even when they appear healthy," Dr. Muntu Davis, county health officer, said in a statement.

DOJ gives California counties 48 hours to identify and set aside ballots of potential noncitizens

LOS ANGELES -- Federal prosecutors sent letters to county registrars across California on Friday, demanding that local officials set aside and verify ballots that the Department of Justice said may belong to noncitizens, according to the Los Angeles County registrar and a letter obtained by The Associated Press. The letters are the latest escalation in a legal battle between California and President Donald Trump's Department of Justice, which has recently focused on the state in its efforts to root out noncitizen voting ahead of the midterm elections. Data shows illegal voting by people who aren't U. S. citizens is incredibly rare, difficult to prove and has not been shown to change the outcome of races. Earlier this month, the federal government targeted Los Angeles County and the California Secretary of State's office in a lawsuit that aimed to block them from counting the votes of roughly 20,000 people who are “likely” noncitizen voters. A hearing on the case is scheduled for Tuesday. The Trump administration has sued California to block the state from counting alleged noncitizen mail-in ballots.

What you need to know about the LA City Attorney's Race

POLITICSSaturday, October 24, 2026 6:07AMLos Angeles city attorney candidates John McKinney and Marissa Roy clash on public safety and liability payouts. LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Back in June, Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto became the first incumbent to lose in a primary in almost a century. She'll be replaced by either L. A. County Prosecutor John McKinney or Deputy Attorney General with California DOJ Marissa Roy. "I'm running for City Attorney because the city needs a fighter. And I want to bring my years of professional experience as a Deputy District Attorney to City Hall to fight for the people across the city," said McKinney. "I'm running to be the attorney for the people and what that really means is an attorney who is protecting Los Angeles, protecting Los Angeles from the Trump administration, from the company stealing wages, from the abusive landlords evicting people into homelessness," said Roy. Both candidates want to lower the millions of dollars the city of Los Angeles has had to pay in liability payouts.

Brewers are living their “Glory Days” after beating Rays in World Series opener

But Rays manager Kevin Cash challenged the out call at second base. Right field umpire Tripp Gibson waved his arms like a traffic cop, shooing people off the field as players from both teams watched replays on the scoreboard. The Rays had nothing to lose by challenging, and they were right. Milwaukee shortstop Cooper Pratt was pulled off second base before he threw to first. Tampa Bay now had the go-ahead run at second base trailing, 3-2. But not for long. Brewers closer Trevor Megill tucked his jersey back in and struck out Jonny DeLuca on five pitches to end the game. Only Jack McKeon, who was 72 when he managed the Marlins past the Yankees in 2003, was older. But Murphy doesn’t cling to the past. The Brewers not getting the benefit of the doubt on the old “neighborhood play” at second base didn’t bother him. “Let’s get it right,” Murphy said. “Let’s not call the neighborhood play.

Thieves target another landscaper, stealing equipment in Eastvale days after Brentwood theft

EASTVALE, Calif. (KABC) -- Landscapers in Eastvale and Brentwood have lost expensive lawn equipment in quick thefts captured on security video this month, leaving both victims without machinery vital to their work. It appears both thefts were executed by the same criminals. Video from an Eastvale home shows two hooded, masked thieves lifting a large piece of lawn equipment into the back of a white SUV before driving away. The equipment belonged to a neighborhood landscaper, according to resident Sylvia Renteria. “He went to do a home, and when he did the front, while he was at the back of the house, he said they stole it — went to the front and saw it was gone,” Renteria said. The theft happened on Tuesday, Oct. 20, around 11 a.m. outside an Eastvale home in the Jurupa Valley. The thieves were gone by the time deputies arrived. Renteria said the stolen lawnmower was new and had cost the landscaper nearly $3,000. “He had purchased this lawnmower, cost him almost $3,000. It was very high tech, and he was so proud of himself because it helped him a lot,” she said.
