Euro rebounds as French protests ease, dollar slips

LONDON -- The euro rebounded slightly on Tuesday as unrest in France eased overnight, while the pound rose after British jobs data showed signs of a recovery in the labour market. The yen also jumped, snapping a two-day drop, after an auction of longer-dated Japanese bonds drew record demand, pushing the U. S. dollar lower after it rose the day before. In France, authorities set curfews in several cities on Monday to curb nationwide anti-government protests which have plunged President Emmanuel Macron’s final months in office into turmoil. France will remain in the spotlight on Tuesday as the lower house is set to vote on the revenue section of the proposed 2027 budget. Concerns about France’s long-term finances have pushed its bonds lower and weighed on the euro since the start of September. James Moore: What Alberta’s ‘remain’ vote means for Mark Carney, Danielle Smith and the conservative movement
Published: October 20, 2026 at 7:44a.m. EDTJames Moore is a former federal cabinet minister under prime minister Stephen Harper and is a contributing columnist for CTVNews.ca. The referendum results in Alberta should mark a turning point for the relationship between not just Alberta and the government in Ottawa, but for Alberta and all of Canada. Canadians outside Alberta have watched and overwhelmingly hoped that the remain side would win. And, I think it is safe to say, that Canadians were both relieved and rejoiced to see that our fellow Canadians in Alberta stood up and stared down those who pushed for a separate Alberta. The process that led to this referendum was driven by Alberta separatists and enabled by a compliant provincial government hoping that a process to vent deep divisions publicly would result in some sort of catharsis that would heal divisions within Alberta’s conservative movement. It likely will not. Live results from the Alberta referendumThe soft separation question of the referendum, about whether to have a definitive referendum on separating from Canada, was overwhelmingly rejected by Albertans.
