Health behaviours and telomere biology in severe mental disorders | Translational Psychiatry - Nature

IntroductionIndividuals affected by severe mental disorders (SMD), such as bipolar and psychotic disorders, have a significantly shorter lifespan when compared to unaffected peers, equal to approximately 15–20 years [1]. In addition to mortality rate, individuals with SMD tend to be disproportionately affected by somatic diseases associated with advanced chronological age, such as metabolic syndromes, cardiovascular disease, and dementia [2, 3]. One proposed explanation for these differences is that individuals with SMD may possess a faster rate of biological ageing [4], as assessed through measurement of telomere length (TL). Telomeres are non-coding endpoints of human chromosomes, comprised of repeating TTAGGG nucleotides [5]. The main function of telomeres is to protect chromosomal ends during DNA replication [6]. Telomeres shorten both through successive cell divisions, and due to cellular and environmental stressors. Telomere length can be extended by telomerase; however, this enzyme is inactive in most somatic cells in the human body [7].

Police used 'justified' force in fatal shooting of one-year-old, says Mississippi attorney general - BBC

Police used 'justified' force in fatal shooting of one-year-old, says Mississippi attorney general5 hours agoMax MatzaCourtesy of family attorney Benjamin CrumpMississippi police used "justified" force when they shot at a car during a shoplifting investigation, killing a one-year-old boy inside, the state's attorney general has ruled. Kohen Wiley was killed in June while sitting on his mother's lap in the passenger seat of a car that police say was being driven at officers in the city of Senatobia. Neither she nor the driver of the vehicle have been charged with a crime. A lawyer for the Wiley family denounced the attorney general's findings on Monday and called for the release of footage from the incident. Police were called to a Walmart store on 14 June after a report of baby supplies being allegedly stolen. According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, officers arrived to find two women and a child walking towards a car. Officers tried to stop the vehicle but it was allegedly driven at one of them, nearly striking an officer.

Exiled critic of Rwandan president found beheaded in Uganda - Al Jazeera

Ugandan police say a male body has been found in a village near Kampala, and his head has yet to be located. An exiled vocal critic of the Rwandan government has been found decapitated near Kampala, south-central Uganda, according to a police spokesperson, in a case which remains under investigation. Ugandan police said on Monday they were investigating the “murder of a male adult (around 50), whose head was cut off, and up to now, the head has not yet been recovered”, spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke told reporters, adding that the body had been identified by relatives as Robert Kabera. The body was found in Luwala, a village near Kampala, and the killing likely took place late on October 16 or early on October 17, police added. Robert Kabera, a former sergeant who fled Rwanda several years ago, was living in Uganda. The former soldier was not critical of the government during his time with the military, but grew increasingly opposed to Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Kabera had a YouTube channel, “Major Robert TV”, with 144,000 subscribers.
