As our industry pours resources into scripts, systems, and personal branding, it is worth asking whether all that polish is quietly working against us. On a recent coaching call, an agent’s success with door knocking led me to a conclusion I think the whole business needs to sit with. In a world of increasingly manufactured everything, authenticity has become the rarest and most valuable competitive advantage an agent has, and most of our training accidentally trains it out of people.

The agent, Brian, was describing why door knocking works so well for him, and as he talked, it was obvious the real driver was not the tactic. It was him. His warmth, his playfulness, his complete comfort being himself. Homeowners respond to that because they can feel it is real. And that points to a truth our profession keeps rediscovering and forgetting. People do not ultimately choose a technique or a brand. They choose a person. We are in the business of human beings, not human doings, and much of our industry has that inverted.
